I have a point-and-shoot camera, and I really enjoy casual photography. I've been thinking about pursuing it as a hobby, starting with an entry-level DSLR camera. It looks like a $500-$1000 investment for the body and lens alone, but what about the software? Right now I use iPhoto and Picasa for light editing and for organization, but do I need Photoshop to get the fullest out of a DSLR? That's another $600 or so to add to my budget. Note that I have no interest in a pirated or cracked version of Photoshop.
