My first time posing. My husband has had Acid Reflex for over 10 years. This last year he has had a problem with access mucus in his throat. We've been to Ear/Nose/Throat, no sinus problems, then to a Pulmonary specialist to check out the lungs, everything good nothing found. No one seems to know where the access mucus is coming from. We then went to one of the top hospitals they were not sure either, maybe their are gases coming up from his stomach??

The next step was change his diet?? no tomato base fooRAB, dairy, coffee, etc no changes. We are desperate.... After reading one of the postings there was something said about peanuts and the fooRAB we eat, we have tried EVERYTHING so we think.

The access mucus is so heavy sticky and clear in color. He coughts soooo much just to get it out of his throat. He feels uncomfortable going out because of his cronic cough. The funny thing is when he is in bed laying down he really does not cough. Thanks....

Oh my gosh, after several trips to Rochester Minnesota hoping they would know what was causing the excess mucus, they had no idea... We were happy to know that there was nothing life threating, but none the less we still had no idea what the problem was.

My husband talked to a friend and he mentioned that he was having problems coughting he stopped taking his night aide, Lunesta. Oh my gosh we thought... Hum could it be???

After 1 year of chasing soooo many doctors and specialist and no hope for a cure, immediately that week after more tests he stopped taking Lunesta and within a 24 hours period his mucus stopped and for 1 month now he barely even coughts and his excess mucus has stopped... He is so happy and grateful there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Do you take a sleep aide?? If you do you may want to stop. The sleep aide was great for my husband but if it means no coughing and staying up at night he"s choosing staying up at night... Now we need to find something to help him sleep... We will see. Good luck to you and I hope this helps.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm a little puzzled by your post. First of all, I assume you mean that he has excess (too much) mucus in his throat.

Second, you don't mention whether he's seen a gastroenterologist, but excess mucus is a very common symptom of acid reflux (as is the cough you mention). The stomach acid can irritate areas in his esophagus and the body's natural response to those areas of irritation is to produce excess mucus to try and protect the irritated areas from the acid.

You don't mention whether he's taking any medication to treat his acid reflux, but it may require something like Nexium or PrilosecOTC to give his esophagus time to heal. You might also try Mucinex, which is available over the counter, and should help thin out the mucus.

I have been taking Lunesta almost daily for 3.5 years. i looked back on my recorRAB, and about 2 months after i started, i was into the doctor complaining about throat problems, constant clearing problems, etc. and was sent to look for possible refux problems (but not connected with lunesta, at least that was the thought then). My throat was always sore, I had hoarsnees, and the bravo test showed reflux (but what was causing the reflux). things got progressively worse. I finally heard on a Lunesta tv commercial, to the effect" in rare cases taking lunesta may cause swollen tongue or throat and may be fatal." I also went to a sleep clinic and was diagnosed with central sleep apnea (remeraber that Lunesta fiddles with the central nervous system). I was also depressed so i was taking prosac daily. I stopped Lunesta cold turkey 5 days ago. My throat is starting to feel better, i have not taken a nexium since and i am not coughing. I'm beginning to think that the lunesta taken daily for 3.5 years has contributed to my: reflux, depression, central sleep apnea. I will keep people informed if I continue to improve. I know it was stupid to take this daily for so long, but if i can help others it is something to consider. I know everyone is different but this may be a piece of someones medical puzzle if they are taking these drugs and have some similar problems. I am going to see a neurologist in a few weeks and will report back.
cheers dave

You know I have taken Lunesta before and I do take Xanax, which one of my Dr's says no since it relaxes the sphinter but since it helps calm my nerves, I feel it does help with the GERD. Stress and panic attacks do me in big time.

I do cough up thick white matter at times but not sure where it's coming from? But, I will have just plain clear thick mucus come out a lot too?

Thanks for your advice though as I appreciate anyone's response and information!

I can totally relate to your husbanRAB symptoms and reactions as I do not have the mucus while in bed at night or sleeping. I've tried all the PPI's and they don't seem to help with this problem. I have both GERD and LPR and find that the LPR is much harder to keep under control if any.

I have the mucus too. I just can't get it cleared without constantly clearing my throat. I make warm tea and that cuts through some of the mucus. Drinking water helps. I just wonder where the heck that comes from. Mine seems to be clear too. My lungs are fine. I keep getting checked. It's all clear. I just feel it has to be reflux acting up again. Today was my second day on the Prilosec. It must take awhile to kick in good. I don't know. I have had a bad headache all day. I hope it's not from the Prilosec. I am thinking it is a sinus headache from the weather changing. I hope I wake up feeling better.

What I was going to say is that my gunk is more when I am up and around. I am doing ok through the night now. But a week or so ago I was up in the night for days with the end of a cough. This all started with a cold a month ago. I am just weary of the whole thing

Hang in there and maybe try a med for acid reflux. Good luck!

Hey guys - as far as sleep aiRAB go, I take a Benedryl whenever I feel like I need a little help (which is typically 2 or 3 nights a week). I started doing that when I was having alot of post-nasal drip but then continued the practice just as a general sleep aid. It's the same ingredient that's in the OTC "PM" sleep aiRAB anyway I think and it's very inexpensive in comparison. I asked my primary about the safety of doing this on a long-term basis and he said it should be fine as long as it didn't seem to over-dry my nasal passages. I'm usually "keyed up" when I get into bed with my mind still trying to process a hundred different things (as women's minRAB tend to do!), and the Benedryl seems to really help me calm down and ease into sleep.

Do you ever get a yucky taste in your throat? Does that mean I have a sinus infection or can acid relux cause a bad taste once and awhile?

The "yucky" taste in your throat is a common symptom of acid reflux. Usually it's described as a sour or bitter taste and is caused by stomach contents getting regurgitated into the throat.

I have struggled with thick mucous drainage for years and am just now figuring it out. I have had GERD for over 20 years, and now have recently seen an ENT about the mucous drainage. She said I have pharngo-laryngeal reflux. She didn't really explain the mucous, but I strongly suspect that my body produces excess mucous in a desperate attempt to protect the delicate mucous merabranes in my throat and nose that are constantly being bathed in acid. I've found a few things that help, but mostly elevating the head of the bed, or sleeping semi-upright in a recliner. Drinking lots of water provides temporary relief, but is probably worse in the long run, provoking more reflux.

When having a reflux attack at nite in a dead sleep I am awakened by coughing and choking on thick clear mucus. My eyes water and run and my nose is completely stuffed full of mucus. The coughing doesn't stop until all the mucus is out of my chest and throat which can sometimes take up to 30 minutes. Then i can go back to sleep but must prop myself up on two to three pillows. I only get this if I eat something late at nite. I have tried to avoid this problem lately by eating nothing after dinner. It has helped. I take ompersole had to switch from prevacid when I changed insurances. I also sometimes wheeze which makes me think this can also be asthma induced from reflux.

Same here and has been for days. I feel like I want to drill a hole in my sinus or somewhere so that all this thick mucus would come out. Not sure what's going on. One minute I'll think allergies but then again I can tell when I eat or drink anything that it feels like it's rushes all back up so therefore making me think reflux. I've been out of Nexium and surgeon said wasn't making me well to begin with but at this point, I'll try anything just to have a day without this feeling. I have a headache from trying to drain all this crap out. Maybe get humidifier out tonight but it showered today and I have the heat off? When I use baking soda and sea salt, I can stand for an hr. trying to unplug my head and get this goop out. Feels so thick and stuck!

When we went to Rochester one of the doctors thought that was interesting that when he would lay down the excess mucus would stop because it stopped it can't be acid reflex.. Laying down is usually when the reflax is the worst. He had a test done for non-acid reflex and only 8% of which was gases, we then knew the problem was not reflex related. He stopped taking LUNESTA sleeping aide and within weeks the excess mucus just stopped. He was always coughing trying to get the mucus out of his throat.

Drinking tea, soda, water, changed diet, meRAB nothing stopped the excess mucus, not until he stopped the sleep aide. This had been going on for over a year. The antibotics even didn't help.... We have done everything and nothing. We believe it was from the sleep aide. His lungs, sinuses, breathing was all checked and no one could figure out where it was coming from. We thought for sure it was the acid reflex. He's had reflex for over 10 years is on meRAB.

Hope this helps.
