This conversation I had with a vietnam veteran almost 15 years ago has always made me wonder. He was stationed in vietnam at a fire base. I don't remember what he said he did(some clerical type work I think) but I do know he only had 2 toes on his right foot. But he walked pretty well considering. A truck he was riding in hit a mine. but that was later.
He told me a story about this pretty french press photojournalist type woman was at the base for a short time, he said she was staying not real far from where he slept. Anyway this one day this pretty french woman came outside of her tent/bunker (whatever) topless and proceeded to take a sponge bath of sorts infront of a bunch of guys. I said that must have been nice and he said that it actually wasn't. He said despite what I may have thought the Men found this spectacle coarse and unlady like. I kinda inferred that I didn't believe him telling him that doesn't sound like a bunch of guys who haven't seen a real naked woman in months. And a white woman to boot.
He told me some guys might mess around on leave but by and large it was the REMFs (rear echelon mother F*****s) that where seeing the prostitutes and bar girls in the cities.
I don't think the guy was a bull shi**** because unlike a TON of other people who b.s. about being in the military he would always name the battalion, company squad. that he was in and where they were and what some other battalion company squad ect ect. were doing and where they were. His retention of numbers was great by anyones standards but got fuzzy on some names sometimes. Still I wonder if he was distorting some facts like this one.
Seems odd to me that guys would not be all that interested in sex, especially given the circumstances. And I don't know why I still think about that all these years later. Maybe because he was a good guy and a great story teller. Maybe because I miss him, he died back in 2000.
So yeah, what do you think.
