Theatre at cinema, would you watch?

I caught something on the radio last night, something about a play being filmed and shown at a cinema. Not sure exactly what it was (I didn't hear the whole review), I presume it was more of a concept that linked into the performance but it did strike me as a great idea.

I understand that theatre should be live and that the interaction between audience and actors is integral and by filming it kind of defeats the object but I found something appealing about this democratic presentation of theatre to a wider audience.

Being stranded at a multi-plex with a choice between Transformers, X-men, or something by The Bard I know which I would choose.

I was just wondering if anyone else would be happy to watch a play on the big screen?

I wasn't aware that they did this but I do love a bit of opera and it would be great to just be able to go and see some, especially when you have very little money and live in the middle of nowhere.

But I think having the option to watch a play - be it drama, comedy, musical, opera at your local cinema is a damn good idea, gets more punters into the cinema and maybe more in theatres (they might want to check out the live show at a later date) - but that's just my opinion, I may well be well off the mark with this one.

Some of the Cineworld cinemas show opera on Saturdays and I seem to recall that they recently showed a play starring Helen Mirren. Seems like a good idea to me.

I watched a performance of The Nutcracker at a cineworld in December. It was excellent. You got a really good view, for a cheap price - but of course you are limited to what the camera shows, so sometimes you get close ups where you might want to see the whole stage.
But for around (i think) 8 quid, i felt it was very good value, and woull definately do it again.
I am quite tempted to see some Opera this way, to see if i would like it!
