The James “Whitey” Bulger saga is also well known in South Florida.
In 2008, Miami-Dade jurors convicted ex-FBI agent John Connolly of second-degree murder with a firearm for leaking sensitive information about Callahan to Bulger and Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, who were FBI informants.
The two dispatched a hitman, John Martorano, to fatally shoot Callahan. His corpse was found in a trunk of a car at Miami International Airport in 1982.
Prosecutors say Connolly tipped the Boston gangsters that Callahan might cooperate in the probe of their earlier murder of World Jai-Alai owner Roger Wheeler.
The 2008 trial, overseen by Miami-Dade and Boston prosecutors working together, featured many of the same agents players who testified in Bulger's Boston federal trial, including Flemmi and Martorano.
Connolly is serving 40 years for the murder and lost an appeal in 2011.
