The well, the water, and the pump.

God is my Judge

I moved awhile back from a tiny little apartment to a house on a farm. I like the size of the house much better but being out of the city sucks. Putting all minor inconveniences aside I like it.
Unfortunately however, we have a well. I actually prefer the well water over the city water but this well has a problem... The pump runs twenty-four hours a goddamn day which runs up the electric bill. To replace the pump we have to pull the 120' of pipe out of the ground to get to the fully submerged pump. The pipe that runs to the pump isn't flexible. It was glued together as the pump was lowered into the ground. if the pipe breaks as we're pulling it up the $800 pump will fall to the bottom of the well.

Any serious suggestions on what to do?

I do really miss running water and showers.

Find the breaker switch that feeds power to the pump and flip it off when you don't need it to be on. Of course, it might need to always be on in order to maintain a positive pressure; like some siphons it can't start itself and if you turn it off you may not be able to get it started again.

Personally, I'd get ahold of a company that installs these pumps and ask them their opinion. To replace a pump with that much pipe on it, they probably either bring out a crane to lift it right out of the ground, or disassemble the pipe as it comes up. If the pipe can be disassembled, it could quite likely be put back together again.

You say the pipe sections are glued together? I'm assuming it's plastic, then. (Correct me if I'm wrong, please.) It is quite likely that with the right amount of heat, the glue would release and the pipe sections would come apart. That's just a guess, though...I really don't know.

Well, pretty much lately I've just been turning the well on when I need to use water. The weather hasn't been good enough to pull the bastard up and mess with it. :P

OK so it seems to work to turn it off and on, eh? That works, although I can see that it would be a pain in the ass.

Is it plastic pipe? Have you talked to a company that works with that kind of shit?
