The transmission in my 1994 Ford Ranger is difficult.?

I think the transmission itself is probably fine. But, it is extremely difficult getting into 1st gear from a stopped position. Getting into 2nd and sometimes 3rd is also tricky. One method of successfully getting into 1st is to shift there as I am coming to a stop instead of waiting until I am stopped. Also, if I turn the car off, I can get right into 1st. When I try to put it into 1st, and it doesn't go, I can hear a clunk. Once it is in a gear, it has no problems running. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help!

Check your oil level. If it is ok, the synchro's might be going out....not sure if they can be adjusted. Have a transmission shop check it out.

Also may have a worn clutch, or low fluid in the slave cylinder reservoir.
