the throttle on my 2001 ford taurus will stick open for a duration of time?

it usually happens for about 30 seconds but has gone for over a minute on a couple of occasions. i dont have cruise controll on or my foot accidently on the gas. the brake easily overpowers the problem so its more of a nuisance than a major saftey problem but it is annoying and worrying to sit at a red light with my foot on the brake and my engine fighting to go forward at 2000 rpm
 
You may have a vacuum leak, or a dirty idle control valve. You can clean the back of the throttle butterfly in the throttle body with a toothbrush and a spray can of throttle body cleaner. Follow the instructions on the can, and you will be surprised at the amount of black crud on the back of the valve if it hasn't been cleaned in a while.
