I just saw this movie for the first time and I thought it was great, really enjoyed it :)

The Theif of Bagdad (1940) - 4.25/5

Very good film. Fantastical and exciting Arabian Nights fantasy, I really enjoyed it :) It has a different tone to the Ray Harryhausen films (this isnt a bad thing), the plummy English accents sounded a bit odd at first given the Arabian setting of the film. I think I may get the Criterion :)
Must be worth an upgrade for the extras.
The flying carpet and sequence with the giant genie is brilliant.

:) yeah I watched it - thought the special effects were pretty great considering it was nearly 70 years old! Can't believe I hadn't seen it before!

It was quite strange hearing the place names used in a different context than we are used to hearing them nowadays... 'aah, there it is - beautiful Basra' etc!

Yeah I agree about the SFX, some pioneering work there including the invention of blue screen (I think) :)
And yeah, it was wierd hearing those names considering how we see Iraq now :o The English accents sound a bit strange I thought.
Enjoyed the film a lot though, like you I cant believe I hadnt seen it!

Cushing, Lee, and great old British character actors like Andre Morell, Francis de Wooff, John Le Mesurier, and Miles Malleson........................absolute bliss.:)
