The taking of Pelham 123

Can they really improve on this already magnificent film? From the trailer it looks like all oif the wonderful suspense created by the script, direction and acting has been replaced but yet more over the top CGI and overly macho posing by Travolta and Washington.

Anyone fans of the original?.

I love the original, having seen it on tv a couple of times. As of yesterday, I've also seen the remake.

It's not too bad to be honest - an enjoyable film, but it's not a patch on the original and they've made a very different film. But the main thing is that it's just, yet again, a remake that didn't need to be made.

Formulaic Tony Scott rubbish.

You know exactly what's going to happen from the trailer. Denzel good, Travolta bad, hostages and money.

Just guess what happens, what always happens...yep, you're right.

Twaddle.

I thought it was entertaining, if you don't expect it to be anything more than an action movie. Travolta was OTT, but I don't think that really matters in films like this. Liked the mayor.

I haven't seen the original, but have heard a few critics(and my Dad, whose opinion I respect) express the view that it was good, but not that good. Classic is a very overused word these days.

That said, one does wonder why there are no original ideas any more, or at least, if they're going to do remakes, why not pick films that weren't that great, and could be improved on eg by a bigger budget, or better special effects or God forbid, a decent script?

Enjoyable film. Nothing special though. But worth a watch.

Liked it better than the original. Just because it's old, doesn't make the original The Godfather or The French Connection. I think it was a fairly average thriller for it's time. I don't consider the original to be a classic, so I don't mind it being done over. I did like the original ending better though (with the sneeze).

Travolata seemed like he was acting in a different movie, and I found his acting to be the weak link. Everyone else was nuanced and realistic, and he was hamming it up like mad. Shades of Battlefield Earth/Swordfish.

Denzel was terrific though. As usual. He rarely plays characters as mild mannered as this. Not a macho character at all. A nicely restrained performance. For the most part, his character is a bit of a pussy, but a resourceful one. He really lets you into his emotional state during the film, just by his looks and expressions. Unlike Travolta, whose "acting" consists of shouting a lot and saying mother f ucker repeatedly.

Also liked James Gandolfini a lot. Did a great job as the Mayor. John Tuturro was excellent as well. Nice cameo from Chris Partlow out of The Wire. Luis Guzman was criminally wasted.

The cast worked nicely for the most part, but Travolta put the whole thing off balance. Should have cast someone else in his role. Denzel could have played Travolta's part better as well, but I enjoyed seeing Denzel play a weaker, less forceful character than he normally undertakes.

But really, in what has been a pretty awful summer for movies, this is actually one of the better offerings of the summer movie output. Faint praise, but there you go.

Watched it this afternoon. Haven't seen the original so can't compare. But really enjoyed this one. Yes it was predictable, but then so are all films lately.
Well worth going to see if you have a spare couple of hours.

I saw it on Saturday and thought it was okay.

A few flaws in the plan like it being in midtown yet kept showing the building as Staten Island Ferry Terminal down the bottom of the city - but thats just me being an NYC lover!

Was it just me or did the laptop pack up cos of battery loss which alerted the criminals but then he managed to get back on it to tell her he loved her??

Oh and the lack of GPS trackers in the bags.

Okay I watch too many US cop shows!!

I seen it today.

Excellent film. Not predictable at all. Action all the way to the end.

These films are great gone the day films like Die Hard and Speed top the box office. I for one have no time for all these 3D/Book films that's out. I miss the 90's as you had alot of action movies. :D

thought this was rubbish.

literally every scene was slowed down or speeded up, completely draining any tension.

was like watching someone have a fit

all tony scott's films lately seem to be filmed like this - man on fire, domino etc

he's a terrible director

and denzel washington ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

also - john travolta was actually insane in this - how coould he have possibly planned this heist??

I've never seen the original but saw this version the other week. Thought it was awful. It didn't feel like it was paced right and Travolta's 'acting' annoyed me. He was so over the top!

Quite liked it. Enjoyable and entertaining. Leave your brain at the door! :D

Liked the use of Jay-Z's '99 Problems' at the start but god was the opening montage where things were speeded up and slowed down shot so badly! It just became irritating after a while. Just get on with it Scott! Lol.

Denzel quality as usual, Travolta average at best.

I've just got back from seeing it, thought it was okay. Denzel was brilliant as always, but my god Travolta was awful! and the constant stream of F worRAB was totally OTT and uneccessary (i'm no prude, but it was practically every other word and in the end it made characters seem like carricatures. Travolta might have been more tolerable without the swearing).

Hi guy's just watched this on sky and I have to say it was rubbish, not a patch on the original.

As has been mentioned John Travolta was totally over the top, he was only supposed to be an ex wall street guy who had been jailed for fraud yet they turned him into a hardened killer and I hated the constant slowing down / speeding up bits at the start and during the rush to get the cash to the station. Denzel was good though.

They should have kept the original ending as well not the usual "shoot me I'm not going back to prison" crap.

I'm just amazed that peeps here are comparing the difference in quality between the films.

People died.

Do you care about that?

Or does the cinematology mean more?
