The Strangers - Anyone Else Dislike This?

I watched this for the first time the other night as i was told it was brilliant, but I was VERY dissapointed! It started off quite well. I liked how the suspense built up at the start, when the couple were in the house, then the husband leaving, the knocks at the door etc. However, after a while I just sat there thinking "get on with it". And when the film did "get on with it", it was simply just a cat and mouse chase around the house (and a pretty boring, not very exciting one at that). They both died at the end too, which is all fine and very well, but there wasn't much of an explanation really. I actually thought it was a pretty pointless film!!

They didn't both die? Liv Tyler is in the sequel as far as I know.

I enjoyed the film, I thought the suspense built up well and had a few genuine jump out of your seat moments.

Not amazing, but a solid 7/10 from me, would watch it again.

Yep, totally agree OP. I bought it on DVD after being told how good it was, but we ended up being incredibly disappointed. There is definitely a feeling of pointlessness about it, I know what you mean. Badly written cop out ending too. "Because you were in". Pffft. Because we couldn't come up with a decent story more like.

Rubbish, not scary, and all round pointless.

I really enjoyed it. I don't see it as being because they couldn't come up with another storyline it was just to add to the fact it was nothing more than a random attack on a couple.

I don't go for that at all, and that just allows them to get away with having no story or plot or characterisation of any kind. How can it be random when they had masks, a plan, and all sorts of crazy crap on them to aid the attack? It was utter nonsense!

I'm old fashioned I suppose. I like films to have a storyline.

They planned on attacking someone and the reason they attacked them was because they were home. In the original script they hear a knock on a door further up the road but don't think anything of it but that was the strangers trying to find someone home or awake at that time.

Basically three teenagers decided they wanted to cause misery on someone, grabbed some masks and decided to terrorize the first house that was still up.

The film doesn't portray any of this. Some people with masks attack some other people in a house for no reason.

There. That's the film.

It's not something I can get excited about personally. I like all types of horror film, from the B&W silent films to old 70's British horrors, to slasher flicks through to low budget scares and beyond. To me, this film offered nothing. It wasn't stylish, it wasn't clever, it had zero scares, it had zero story. It was cheap, poorly written, poorly executed bobbins. And the naff "I'm still alive!" bit at the end. Puuurlease.

You can't make me like it. So nyarr! :p :D

Thought it was quite good actually.

Are any of the people who didn't like it watching it at night with 5.1 surround sound? Film has a good sound track , adRAB a lot to the suspense and fear.

It's nothing special but not terrible, and was done a year or so before by the French film Ils/Them. Oh and The Strangers wasn't a remake... nope not a remake... of course not...

Ils/Them is much better. Creepier and they don't have the stupid masks.

I absoulty agree with the OP too. The film just failed to materilse into a cohearant story. I'm also aware the film is based on a true story but that dosen't excuse why no creative license was used to make it entertaining.

Absolutely. I think maybe if I was 20 years younger I might have found it quite brilliant. But in my wizened mid thirties I've not only seen it all before, but seen it done with more class, panache, and quality than this cheapo effort.

That is the storyline though?

Unlike other horrors were we watch and see Killer attack victim because Killer feels the victim deserves it, ie Scream 1 Billy goes after Sidney because of what Sidney's mum did to Billy's family. The scare in The Stranger's is that you can be a good person, good family, have wronged noone in your life, but you're still not safe, these people are attacking at random, to them if you are at home you are fair game. It wasn't a "cop out" ending, it was the whole point of the film, it was pretty clearly stated in all reviews, previews and trailers for the film, what did you expect?
