Broadcast Order: Season 21, Episode 1
Production Order: Season 20, Episode 13

Writers: Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg
Director: Lance Kramer

The 21st season of the longest American animated series starts tonight at 8 PM Eastern. The debut episode has two guest writers for this: Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg(Superbad, Pineapple Express). Will they breathe new life into the show? Or will the show's staff writers meddle with their ideas and turn the episode into something completely different? Tune in to find out. Here is the synopsis:

Everytime a new season of Simpsons begins, I say to myself, "Maybe this season will be really good, maybe they'll finally figure out how to make the show amazing again."

And then after every new season ends, I realize its been the same since Season 11.

Well, maybe I'll be proven wrong this year.

Or not.

I have faith in Rogen and Goldberg. Hopefully this should be one to remember. I haven't been this excited for a FOX Sunday since... King of the Hill's finale... less than two weeks ago.

Well, the point is that I'm excited.

Well, I was about to declare this episode an absolute failure until that vomit gag came. That was awesome. Especially considering you didn't even hear it.

So far so good. I especially liked "the montage" and the scene where Groening was stealing and moving the books to the Bongo truck. If this episode does well enough, I'm sure Everyman will return in Bongo form (their follow-up stories for The Pie Man have been pretty good).

I know who Rogen is, but who is Goldberg?

Can't wait for the big celebration in January.

Good bye

Bad bye.

It was a good episode, I'll say. I chuckled, but there were no  moments. Sexy Homer was funny looking. The training sequences were good too. The episode felt like it was missing something though, something....

My favorite line, well "lines" were when Homer was chosen as Everyman.

"If this gets out, the online communities will ridicule me. ILoveSpock, The Dork Knight, ILoveKenny675...." I think it's funny because we have a member here named The Dork Knight. Definitely a coincidence, but, still....

"Would you like to see me naked?"
"There's no nudity in this movie."
"What movie?"

I find it ironic that "Family Guy" can get away with murder and yet "The Simpsons" has to bleep out the word "masturbating".

The "yo-yo diet" gag made me giggle. It's always nice when a character tries to make other characters laugh - feels a bit more human.

Nice poses on Homer's pole dance. Wonder who animated that?

"Ah! What was that?"
"Your other hand."

"I smell Oscar" was funnier when "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" did it.

Marge looks hot in that nightie. There, I said it and I'm proud.

This four-act structure still feels awkward.

"Eddie Murphy in Fat Suit". Okay, that's funny.

Everyman 2: Rise of the Revenge sounds very George Meyer-esque. (I still want to see The Wedding Marriage.)

Eh. Mediocre episode all around. To be honest, this is the first Seth Rogen-penned thing I've ever seen. Are all his movies this "guess the joke"-y, or was that just the rewrite room?

Best bits were the posters:

Star Wars Episode: ? Apology
Eddie Murphy in: "Fat Suit"
"Welcome Back Potter"
"Alvin and the Chipmunks with Rabies"

And the editing joke, but that was done in "Radioactive Man"

3/5, An Al Jean episode by any other name...
