Rather than having to deal with the fee-for-carriage issues in the first place [and to save bandwidth], it would wise for bell to completely eliminate local network feeds [both sd and hd] and just have an east and west feed. To deal with the whiners, just run ads explaining how to plug an antenna into the receiver. That way, grandma can still have her supper-hour news. This would apply to: CBC, CTV, Global, CityTV, E!, A, CTS, Omni, SRC, TQS, and TVA. Just think of the bandwidth savings!

Personally I wouldn't mind if they got rid of most of the SD channels, but as for dropping the locals, there are people who don't live within range of OTA broadcasts, despite what works for those living in COTU, so their only way of getting locals is cable or satellite.

Actually I would prefer to see the satellite and cable companies fighting fire with fire. This issue really is nothing to do with saving local stations - that's just a convenient ruse to whip up support - like "cancel the RCMP musical ride" (IMHO!). So if fee-for-carriage is imposed, let the carriers be allowed to charge an equal and opposite fee for carrying advertisng content, from which they (the carriers) gain nothing.

I'm sure their customers would really be happy about that.

In case you forgot, the reason Bell supplies a lot of these channels is because people want them.

Yea, I would not be happy if they got rid of either Barrie, Hamiltion or Toronto news. We all like to see our locals for what is going on in our area.

I wish there was a law in place that states that locals MUST be spot beamed to there own markets ONLY. This also includes HD locals. Now if a CTV/Global/CBC feed is not carried locally in that market the customer would THEN AND ONLY THEN be allowed to have the option of the national feeds from Toronto/Vancover if so desired. Also in accordance with this law simsubbing would have to be done on the end users end not at the uplink center. This is the true and only way to save local TV.

I want all the locals after all we are paying for them. Not all of us have HD the majority of the subscriber still have SD. Where I live I only get 4 OTA channels and the picture on them is horrible even with an antenna. The only channel received OTA are local cbc and ctv as well as TVO and the french CBC channel. Not all of us live in Toronto and get a lot of OTA Channels.

OP,

Guess what? If I hang an antenna outside, I might get 1 channel.

We all don't live in the centre of universe like you where OTA is so abundant.

I live nowhere near Toronto or Vancover and my point is that if you can't get all three locally on Bell or any other provider(NOT OTA) then you would be able to have the distant locals if you wanted, problem solved.

What about people, like me, who have occasion to use the "time shift" channels from other time zones? Aren't we allowed to get those stations?

Personally, I think people know how to get SDTV by over-the-air, they just don't like experimenting and stuff so I think that's why they get satellite tv or cable...(digital ota would be great but many people think that it is signal stealing)

Many also cannot put up a decent antenna, because they live in an apartment or condo. Or they may be shaddowed by some hill or building. In my condo, I can receive several, but not all, Toronto stations & Hamilton, but I cannot get Buffalo. Also, most of what I watch is on cable channels and simply not available OTA.

I like having my local channels plus the local CBC/CTV/Global feeds from every major city in the country. With an antenna around here, you're lucky to even get the local St. John's CBC and the picture isn't clear at all.

Hey!!!....I like it!!!!
A fee to carry their signals. Since they are forced to carry them, and they don't recieve any revenue from the advertising, they should be compensated.

The issue of locals can be debatable. Whose locals get priorty?

The argument can always be said Why do I have to stick a attenna to get my locals?

Example those in Ottawa will say " why shoukd we have to purt up an attenna to get CBC OTTAWA & CJOH(CTV),A-Channel Ottawa, and the thre french networks, and those in Toronto don't have to put up an attenna? Let those in Toronto put one up and let us have our locals"

And thats where the debayte start My City comes before your city. And thats where you get fighting occuring. Why should I have shell out more money for an attenna wwhile those in Toronto are laughing.

The same arguement could be said in every city BTV has locals from that their carrying?

So who wins? If BTV starts to drop locals but SD or your local cable company doesn't(for timer shifting) then most wil switch to either SD otr your local cable company.
