The Sansa Media Converter wont recognize my Sansa Player.?

I downloaded the firmware and the latest Sansa Media Converter, however, when I run the Sansa Media Converter, my device is not recognized even though it is pluged into the computer. Because my device is not recognized, I cannot convert photos (ie. the "covert" tab is gray).
Why is this?
What mode should my sansa be in? a
nd if there is a specific mode, how can I ensure that my sansa is in that mode?
