The salsa I made, today, is awful?

even the cat won't get near it. What should I do? Maybe turn it over to a real cook who could add some stuff?
I wanted VERY mild. I used:
2 lg tomatos,
1 med valdia onion,
1 green pepper,
1 "sort of" hot pepper, all diced.

1 8 oz can tomato puree
4 oz tomato juice
salt

The cat thing was a joke. I might have tried a dog, but I don't have one.
Mt Girl: That was what the recipe called for. Tomato juice and puree

i'd use a yellow onion as the vadalia tend to be pretty sweet.omit the tomato juice and puree. the juice from the tomatoes is plenty, it may also be the reason it didn't taste well. add some cilantro, very necessary in my book, some lime juice and a little jalapeno, adding a small amount won't make it hot, just give it some flavor. oh, and salt

edit - i forgot. a clove of chopped garlic too.

Were your tomatoes rotten? I'd start there. Keep it simple & keep it fresh!
*Edit: That recipe sounds more like some type of a sauce. Those valdia/valdalia onions are sweet & yellow. Not great for salsa, imho.

When I make mine, all I use are fresh tomatoes (field or hot house...never italian), white onion, garlic, cilantro, fresh green jalepeno pepper, OR red pastilla chili, OR cayenne powder. Chop, mix & add the juice of half a lime. I don't use salt or pepper & would never use canned anything for fresh SALSA! I call it Pico de Gallo (pronounced "P-Co-Day-Guy-Yo")....mix it together in a bowl, cover & let sit overnight in the fridge for the flavors to get really bold. It's Deliciouso!
Tastes great with no peppers too. Just shake a bit of no salt lemon pepper in the mix to get a little kick.
To get super mild salsa, you might want to try the green stuff or Salsa Verde. It has a completely different taste because it's made from tomatillos (green tomatoes).

feeding a cat salsa? Are you sure? sounds toxic to me..

If it's no good (the salsa, not the cat), it's best to toss it & start over. Make sure your tomatoes, onions, & chiles are fresh, dice them all, add oregano & cilantro if you like it, and start scoopin'

Sounds very sweet and bland. You need yellow onion, notI sweet. Add some diced fresh garlic clove, some finely diced cilantro, forget the tomato juices as the diced fresh tomatoes will make their own. I don't like it spicy so I add diced banana peppers instead of jalapeno- although a few seeds from a jalapeno will give it a happy little tang.

Hi Grammie,
If you want good salsa you have to use Fresh ingredients..My Friend made a very good salsa for us today..It is called a Fruit salsa..
1- get one nice red onion
2- one canopy
3- one person watermelon
4- one nice yellow onion(half in half)
5- salt to taste
6- A good chili powder(Like Mamas)
7- Cider vinegar
8- Start with one Large bowl(I forgot to list it first)
9- 3 fresh Limes
10- Just a tablespoon and 1/2 of sugar
Diced the red onion,Peel the canopy and cut into small cubes,Peel the one person watermelon and cut into small, cubes, salt to taste and salt does bring out the favorite,Put in Mama's chile powder about 2 teaspoon,or more if you would like too,A couple of squirts of cider vinegar,3 fresh limes squeeze into the salsa,Tablespoon and 1/2 of sugar..Now mix all ingredient's together(GENTLE) Taste and see if you need to add more salt or anything else..Put in frig for 2 hours and then eat it..It gos with anything and is very good..Try it,you will not be disappointed,I promise..

add a little brown sugar, dried mustard, chili powder, salt, pepper, garlic and of course lots of green onion. Check it out and pass the chips and sour cream.

There are plenty of other salsa recipes that you might like better; if you don't like the salsa then toss it into a flower bed or compost heap and try again.

Here are a couple of salsa recipes that I use and like:

2 large fresh tomatoes (Cherokee purple is my favorite, but a local beefsteak or big boy will do)
1/2 yellow onion chopped fine
1 glove of garlic minced (or 1/2 tsp garlic poweder)
4 tablespoons olive oil
fresh squeezed juice from 1 lime
1 chili pepper, seeded, and diced fine (poblanos are mild, jalapeno, serrano, habanero are hot)
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cumin
fresh chopped cilantro (to taste, coarse chop)
Mix all ingredients in a glass or ceramic bowl, cover, refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

My other recipe uses canned diced tomatoes; decrease the salt to 1/4 tsp, and decrease the lime juice to half a lime.

Please try again.....;)

What is wrong with it? No flavor? not spicy enough? too spicy? did u use fresh or canned/dry ingredients?
Add more salt if not flavorful enough.
If its salsa for chips put green onion or cilantro in it if you like cilantro. Maybe a tiny bit of garlic?

I'd have to see your recipe, and procedure in order to know, but, sometimes a little sugar can kinda blend all of the different spices together, and smooth things out. Don't give up.....hang in there.

You don't want the cat to go near it. Not good. I would throw it out and start over this time with a recipe. If any of the ingredients were bad by adding something else to it is not going to make it any better, just wasting more food. And as the saying went "Children are starving all over the world" somethings never change, they are still starving.
