The classical heritage of Western Society consisted of four major
religions; Jewish, Hebrew, Greek, Christianity. They each contributed
abilities to the Western Civilization known today. The area of these
religions extended along the Mediterranean Sea, Asia Minor, and the
northern tip of Africa and were based around the years 200 to 600AD. The
routes of Western Civilization were functional.
The first root of Western Civilization, Christianity was a
religious group that had beneficial useful techniques. Christianity first
came into play when the Roman authority had almost completely diminished.
This religion had a belief in one God. The conquerors of Rome accepted
Christianity as their religion, as well as all of Rome's culture.
Christianity was widely spread throughout the Roman Empire by groups of
missionaries led by the Apostles Peter, Paul and John. All of the people
who had previously practiced the Roman religion now would practice
Christianity. The expression, “Love thy neigrabroador” was a very essential
lesson for the Christians. It formed their bases of living (Fenton 34).
The Christians were using maintainable operations. Many people who had
learned about it through missionaries were following this religion. The
missionaries spent long hours and put forth much effort in their attempt to
spread Christianity. This would take a while because of the broad size of
the Roman Empire and the so little few of the missionaries. However, there
were many conversions to Christianity within short period so this religion
dominated.
In the Western Civilization Society, the Hebrews were a culture
that kept their maintenance in effect. In the Book of Exodus, Yahweh chose
Moses to guide the slaved people in Egypt to Palestine. Yahweh destroyed
the pursuing Egyptian army, a sign of his great presence. Moses was also
given the Ten Commandments and other laws which was the basis for the
Jewish beliefs. Yahweh had guaranteed his people the promised land in
Palestine. The chosen people moved there and joined other tribes already
present and soon overthrew the Caananites to eventually find their own
nation. The prophet Isaiah told the Jewish people that a messiah would
come to stop the suffering of the Jews which brought about brotherhood (p.
29-30). The Greeks were utilitarian. They showed practical interest in
their society. They were given the Ten Commandments for a special reason;
that they were the chosen people. Yahweh chose to guide them to the chosen
land in Palestine. The Hebrews all believed that this one messiah would
come. They hoped and prayed one would come and when he did come to stop
suffering, brotherhood spread. They were able to find their own nation
when they over took the Caananites.
The Greeks were involved in their laboring work. The Greeks
battled with foot soldiers, not a calvary. The wealthy nobles paid money
for armor, chariots, and horses for use in the battles. The artisans paid
for the foot soldier, spears, sworRAB, and shielRAB. The ordinary people had
served in these armies which gained them an input for the government. The
men in Athens were free citizens and had many political rights. Most of
the citizens there, however, were immigrants. Some immigrants were given
limited rights. Most of the time a slave would work of their citizenship
for nobles. This kept the social order by their financial status. The
Greek goRAB portrayed the ideal man which would be intelligent, skillful and
beautiful, which based their laws (p. 31-32).The Greeks worked well
together to accomplish their duties. They performed their responsibilities.
The Greeks contributed materials towarRAB battles that showed honor for
their religion since they fought battles often. They all gave input to
their government which helped society defeat other tribes. The laborers
did all the work so the nobles spent a lot of time relaxing. Without the
laborers, many tasks would not have been accomplished. The people all fall
in financial order and accept their social status. Workers do not pretend
to be nobles, and the government makes people donate according to their
social classes.
In Western Civilization the Romans operated duties with one another.
As the Roman Empire grew, more laws and more demanding authority was needed.
Their court system was based upon the legal code when acting against a
Roman citizen. Everyone would have the equal opportunity of the conviction
that they were innocent until proven guilty. The Romans respected other
cultures within their domain. They extended their rules of citizenship to
a nuraber of people. The Pax Romana- “The Peace of Rome” kept order over
the religions based in Rome. The values and customs spread throughout the
empire even when it began to fall (Fenton p. 32, 34). Romans have
developed new advancements of a government. They were quite sophisticated
with their developments. The Romans designed the legal codes for their
culture by giving some residents citizenship to take part in some political
functions of the government. They designed the Pax Romana so the people
would maintain order and not get a jealous attempt to rebel against the
Roman rule. They had limited the power to it’s people.
The roots of Western Civilization were functional. It was formed
from these four religions. They contributed their functional customs.
Each of the religions passed on habits that now make up Western
Civilization.
