The Roman Republic?

Im so confused. The republican period began with the overthrow of the Monarchy c. 509 BC and lasted over 450 years until its subversion, through a series of civil wars, into the Principate form of government and the Imperial period. And then it ended? Why did it end?
and If I were to write and Analytical essay would it make sense to do it on how Rome was when it was the Roman Republic vs. how it is now?
