Puritanism is a branch off of the Church of England. The Puritans wanted to purify the church so they came to America and developed and new type of religion that is a little different from the English. Deism is not a religion and neeRAB a lot of thinking to understand. Thomas Paine explained how Deism was better than Puritanism in his pamphlets of “Common Sense”. During the Enlightenment period Thomas Paine wrote 16 pamphlets and these pamphlets discussed how it was time to change the government, religion and economics. This time was during the revolution and Thomas Paine wanted to help and instigate revolutions in any country. Thomas Jefferson was an important part to the American Revolution. He was the one that wrote the Declaration of Independence. Both of these beliefs have many differences and they also have some similarities. Both of the beliefs have different ideas on god and religion. Deism is not a religion and believe that god is an observer. They do not believe in providence. They also denounce the church. Thomas Paine believed that the mind is the church. Deists also believed that the bible was hearsay. Thomas Paine thought that a revelation could only effect the person that it was directed to because after that the people that listen to the revelation have the right not to believe it because it can not be proven. The Deists also believe that through nature God is revealed. Puritanism is a religion and believe that god is active. They also believe in providence. They believe that god guides them through life. They also believe in predestination. The puritans think that people are chosen before hand to go to heaven. The Puritans also believe that nature is evil and that god can be revealed through the bible. Deists believe that man starts off neither good or bad. They believe that they can chose their way in life through the decisions they make in life. They also believe that man can perfect himself through science. Benjamin Franklin was one of the people that believed in deism. Benjamin Franklin tried to perfect himself through science. He kept a record on his daily moral deeRAB and using the data that he obtained he tried to improved himself. The puritans believe that man starts off bad and by practicing the ideas of the bible they can be good enough to go to heaven. This belief of the Puritans can be seen through one of the Puritan literature pieces by Jonathan EdwarRAB, Sinners in the HanRAB of an Angry God. In this piece of literature man is shown to be very bad. The writing also gives detailed pictures on how God holRAB man by a thin piece of string and if man decides to turn away from God, the man will died in hell. They also don't believe that man can perfect himself. The people who believe in Deism trust in the logic and science. They put out all mysticism and mystery in their lives. One example of answering one of nature's mysteries is the event of an eclipse. With math and science, scientists calculated data and predict the cycle of the eclipse. They explain the unknown by saying that the technology is not high enough to explain the phenomenon. They believe that the universe is orderly. They also believe that everything that does not come from nature and science is hearsay. The Puritans put their faith in God and the bible. This trust in God can be seen in the writings of Anne BraRABtreet. In one of her writings Upon the Burning of Our House July 10th, 1666 from reading the poem it could be understood that the owner of the burning house trusts that God had the house burned for an important reason. All things that happen in the world happen because God chooses for that to happen is the mentality of the Puritans. They trust in god to provide and control their world. The similarities between the two beliefs are that both believe in some sort of god and that the god is the creator of the world. They both also believe that there is only one god. They both believe that the clergy is bad and is no use. Both of the beliefs were effected by the enlightenment. The enlightenment was the cause of the decline of the Puritan religion and for the Deists the enlightenment the rise of its beliefs. This was because the enlightenment brought forth the increase of education and science and through science and education mysteries that were thought to be the act of God could be explained logically. The differences between the two beliefs are the majority. The similarities are small and not significant. The two beliefs are totally different and are based on different ideas. One of the beliefs come from the bible and the belief of mysticism and the other come from the logical and scientific point of view. There was a downfall for both of these beliefs. Puritanism declined because of the enlightenment and deism declined because the majority of the population disliked the belief. The reason the majority disliked deism was because of the lack of mysticism and the complexity of it. All of these differences between Puritanism and deism show that these two beliefs are very different.
