The real culprit behind price hikes of gasoline?

I always assumed that the recent price jumps of oil was due to a decrease of the supply of oil from the Middle East to the United States. Apparently that's not true however, as the supply of oil has been relatively steady the past four years. If this is the case, why have we seen a substantial price hike of oil in recent years? Thank you for all of your answers in advance.
