I've noticed that discussion of Canadian cartoons here has been pretty much limited to 6teen, so I thought I'd throw another name into the mix. Who here has seen any episodes of The Raccoons?
Having only seen a couple episodes so far, I still haven't seen too much about the series, but I like what I see. The middle to later episodes are quite plot- and character-driven, which I would imagine was quite unusual at the time. The episode "Moving In", where Lisa moved in and befriended Bentley, is possibly one of my favorite episodes of any series ever. I really like the interaction between Bentley and Lisa, and Lisa's emotions after moving seemed very believable, enough to make me cry a little. In some ways, Bentley seems like a younger me, minus the Asperger's.
I also like how the series plays out Cyril Sneer as a villain, but still shows his softer side, like in "The One That Got Away" where he gets emotional over losing his favorite fishing spot (there we go again with believable emotions). On top of that, I really like the character designs in general, but as I've said before, I'm a sucker for cartoons with furry-humanoid-animal-thingies-whatever the proper word is for them.
Overall, I think this is a great cartoon that doesn't seem to be well known today, except maybe among the residents of the Great Cold… I mean, Great White North. The fact that it hasn't had a proper DVD release is… well, I'd say it's almost as surprising as Rugrats not having a proper DVD release.
Has anyone here ever seen any episodes of the series? What did you think of it?
