The Old Testament is not a strong point of mine, but let me try to give you a pointer or two. First, it is prophet. Isaiah was a prophet of God. Not profit. Profit means financial or other sort of gain. Understandable mistake. Each prophet is associated with a reigning King of the period of history. Often, if not always, the Prophets railing against sin, preachingt, pleading,
living for the Lord, saved the people from total destruction.. could say merely that Isaiah was a prophet of God sent to preach to the Israelites. He said "Isaiah 61: 1 His purpose.
Background of Isaiah:
It is difficult to understand what is going on in the OT when you jump in and read one chapter without knowing the history. In all Bible Study we need to consider what is going on in history at the time, who is speaking, to whom he is speaking, what is the subject, what is going on in history at the time. (Who, what, when, where, why.) No scripture is of private interpretation. Scriptures to believers are to all
believers, to unbelievers are to all unbelievers.
The OT is divided into sections.
Genesis through Deuteronomy tells of creation, man, the fall of man, or Adam and Eve, then the flood. The dispersion of Noah's sons throughout the earth, the Children of Israel, Moses leading the children out of Egypt,
wandering in the wilderness, giving of the Law of Moses, or the Ten commandments and all the other
laws which goes with the Law of Moses.
Joshua through Esther is about organization.
Job through Lamentations are considered poetical books. Isaiah is considered a sermon book
The Bible is One Book with God considered the true author, but it contains many books written by many men inspired by God. Christians believe the Old Testament and the New Testament go together, with the entire Bible from beginning to end, Genesis to Revelation about the Lord Jesus Christ, and redemption of mankind.. Preparation is the Old Testament. Manifestation of Jesus Christ is the Gospels. Propagation or spread of gospel is the Book of Acts. Explanation is the Epistles and Consummation is the "Revelation or apocalypse.
When you read the OT (Old Testament) you will
find it skips around, or seems to. If you have a reference Bible with a center column, run the references and read them, you will find more information re. what you are reading.. For instance the Book of I Chronicles you read about King David. Second Chronicles about his son, King Solomon . The book of II Chronicles tells of the Kings and of
Jotham and Isaiah's time.
You will find during the reigns of the Kings they
waxed and waned in evility. Their evil always
began with erection of the groves,
high places where they worshiped idols and committed
horrible sins, the favorite seeming to be burning children alive, yes sacrificing of BURNING CHILDREN ALIVE. This
offense always brought horrible retribution from the
Lord. Then a Godly King would tear down the groves, the high places, get rid of this, return to the Lord.
Some of the Kings tried to mix this, or served the Lord
but did not tear down the groves as God ordered.
Now. To understand Isaiah. You can get a chronological list of the Kings, and the prophets and an understanding of what was going on.
If you type in the search engine "Kings of Israel"
you will come up with a chronological list of the Kings.
Don't let this daunt you. It is interesting.
On the Inet, the composer of the list classified the Kings of Israel as to their degree of wickedness or
goodness. That is very apt. They were mostly either very evil, or very good. What does the Bible say.
You cannot serve two masters You will either love
one or hate the other. You cannot serve God and
mammon, or God and Satan.
Remember the Children of Israel were taken captive
in history, not just once. Captivity was by the idolatrous nations and a result of their idolatry also. This is important.
Your internet can help you sort this out.
When the Bible refers to Judah, the Bible is speaking of 'Southern Kingdom, and Israel is called the Northern Kingdom. ISAIAH the Prophet is of the Southern Kingdom. Jerusalem is very important in the Bible and was with the Southern Kingdom. Isaiah, Hosea, Mica are with the Southern Kingdom. Israel , the Northern Kingdom them, was very wicked.
(These kingdoms and boundaries, etc. are different today, of course.)
David's line: King David, is very important because Jesus Christ through Joseph, is descended through King David. Ruth married a man descended through King David.
I may be inundating you, but if you will keep this
as you read it will help sort it out. In 931 Solomon died. Israel was divided into Northern and Southern Kingdoms. Ephraim and Israel are the collective names of the TEN tribes of Israel.
The Northern Kingdom became Samaria. Sent into exile. Outcasts of Israel, dispersed of Judah. Hidden. Evil Kings, Good kings.
Isaiah saw Himself compared to the Lord.
Before he could be of use to his people,
he had to get right. He did this by comparing himself to the Lord, not others.
