The problem with sleeping on side or Back.

The surgeon I am seeing told me that he does an anterior lurabar fusion so I was wondering if this would change the problem with hardware pushing on anywhere as it may only be an internal plate? This is the third neurosurgeon I have seen and he is the only one who told me this is an option. I am a bit worried about this type of surgery but then relieved that I would not have the muscles cut through in my back. Has anyone here had this type of surgery? How long would it take to get over the muscles being cut in front instead? I assume that this wouldn't effect sleeping on my back or sides. Also I would think taking out hardware wouldn't be such an issue? I would think the hardware would just stay in as part of the fusion. I also don't know if the risks of surgery are any different by having anterior surgery compared to posterior. I think there would be less muscle but more risk with bleeding etc? Any help with this decision would be great as otherwise I am pretty much ignorant about the difference. Thanks. Allan
 
It will take as long to heal one way or the other. Both are major surgeries. They still cut going through the front. There has to be an incision with the surgeries you are talking about. Either way muscles are cut.
I have a scar from the navel down to-well you get the idea. Then I also have the scar up my back. The stitched the front outer layer and stapled my back because of the length. The PA told me that stitches would have pullled out in my back because of the length. There were 53 staples.

The hardware is placed in the same places whether they go in from the front or the back. Most surgeons leave the hardware in unless there is a reason to remove it...and it's the same surgery to take it out. Another incision...

As far as sleeping, depending what you have done, you usually have to sleep on your back for the first couple of months. If you lay on your side, you have to be perfectly vertical and stay that way. No grabbing a pillow are curling up with it.

The bleeding doesn't come from the incision, it comes from the work that they do inside, so I don't think it would make much of a difference. What will make the difference is how much they need to do and how long it takes. I ended up using the two units of my own blood and another unit because mine was so difficult.

Actually the front incision hurts more. You can't laugh or sneeze without seeing stars because your abdominal muscles are used for alot more than you think.

For as long as you have been suffering I would have thought that you had read up on the different proceedures and such. I know you are fairly homebound, so turn on the 'puter and start searching so you are well informed on the different types of surgery and how it goes. You are scheduled for later in the fall, aren't you?





 
Yes Noveraber or Deceraber though I don't know how long the surgeon neeRAB to get me in. That is why I have started as soon as I could with having more than one opinion. I really don't know how I should choose the right surgeon as the 3 I have seen all come highly recommended. The first I didn't like him at all so I will not be seeing him again, and the second was very nice but I believe he does the posterior fusion and this one has ordered a new MRI before he wants to get into it much but he seemed ok as well. He is at a surgery with 3 neurosurgeons QNS. I assume there may be a second doctor assisting but am not sure that it would be a second neurosurgeon. I suppose I will be able to get into some of my questions when he has the new MRI. It is a lot for me to take in at present as not only do I have this surgery I have also been moved out of my sisters place and I now share with my disabled niece. It just is a challenge right now as I was sort of told to leave and it isn't really a good time for me. I have had to do a lot of work here to make it liveable as her ex was a lazy dirty no-hoper as far as I am concerned. I have had to do a lot of painting and my family have had to help clean up after him. About 4 trailer loaRAB so far. My niece and her 3 year old daughter deserve more.
So I will fill you in on how the MRI goes so I maybe can get some advice from the experienced merabers here. I really could use some support and some help to decide what way I should go. At the moment I believe I have the two options Front or back? Thanks. Allan
