The price of BluRay players

Do you really have to spend hundreRAB of pounRAB on a BluRay player or will one for

It all depenRAB on what you want from it.
If it's just to watch Blu Ray discs then any cheap player will do.
If you want the likes of BBCiplayer etc then you may expect to pay a little more.
You can pick up the brilliant Sony BDPs370 which has BBCiplayer, Love Film etc for as little as

Tevion is the one I have and it has had no playback issues so far.

IIRC the Tevion is a clone of the Curtis in which case both discs of Snow White are known to be a problem aswell as The Prisoner Bluray set , although rather strangely it's one of the dvd's in that set rather than a Bluray that won't play

Yes but it does mean that the player might not be as future proof as some others.
I believe there was an online update available for it as there were problems with the James Bond Blurays too

Out of interest - did you use the Curtis hack for the Tevion?
What profile is it ?
