....? I know the discovery of North America was driven by several different wants, but how did the portuguese lead them on to preparation of the findingS ?

As the one above says, the Portuguese did own the passage around Africa. Spain, under the influence of the the delusional Colon( he was convince that the circumference of the earth was quite a bit smaller, forget all the flat earth nonsense), let him try for a western route to the East. Not much of a gamble, a nut case Italian, a few worn out useless ships and sailors of questionable value.

Portuguese were not interested in a westward passage. They had too much invested in the eastern route. They basically owned the eastern way. The Spanish were willing to bankroll Columbus on a gamble, they were not confident. No one was looking for North America, A lucky mistake for Spain.

They were probably fishing the Grand Banks or near. As well they had organized explorations and training sponsered by Prince Henry the Navigatior to find a route to the far East around Africa. They were naturally ready to make other discoveries. Gasper and Miguel De Corte Reale were brothers who explored around the Candian East coast and were eventually lost at sea....
