The Pianist

Watched this last Saturday at the local cinema. Very moving, as you'd expect. It's basically a story of one man's ordeal in Warsaw during WWII. From normality, through the ghetto experiences and on to liberation by the Russians. Haunting stuff with some truly horrific scenes.

I'm glad this film got the recognition it deserved at the Oscars. Gangs of New York was not as good as it was hyped to be and Chicago, well, that's a matter of taste I suppose :-)

I bought the DVD on Monday (as I am a big Polanksi fan anyway). i haven't yet had the time to sit and watch it - that I plan to do this Saturday during the day, but i hear excellent things and i am very much looking forward to it.

After watching the DVD of this I found the book in my local bookshop. The film follows it reasonably accurately - it takes a few liberties but it captures the essence of the book, and the book explains a few things that were a bit unclear in the film.

It's a fairly short book - I read it in about an hour, but well worth the read.

I've just bought this from amazon.

I'm puzzled - when I rented the DVD it was a 2.35:1 aspect ratio yet the DVD I've bought it 1.85:1 ratio

I feel a little cheated!:(

I have to say this is an excellent film, very moving and shows how disgusting the Nazis really were in the treatment of the Jewish people.
