Well I guess Ill just have to see Chicago before I can fully comment on that!

RE: The List Itself...

Two out of the ten are "critically acclaimed" films, Shawshank and 2001, where as the other eight are pure, escapist, mainstream films...

So I agree that this list is very arbitrary in that it is not a real reflection of how Hollywood works in terms of the nominating and voting process right now.

Also, the big thing that determines what films win what these days is if the film and its genre are going to keep getting people work... And I am talking about the behind-the-scenes talents more than the actors in this case.

This precisely why films like LOTRs are so popular now with the Academy.

There is a enormous sub-industry of visual and special effects houses that exist now thanks to all the CGI and other effects more and more films are using these days that include dramas and smaller films as well as big summer blockbusters.

For example, having a character age from their 20s to their 60s can now be done with makeup AND digital post-production enhancement with the same actor playing both roles instead of hiring two actors and having to pay them separately.

Opening title sequences are actually subcontracted out to digital effects firms and that is the only thing they do on the entire film... But it is still work that needs to be done.

The Super Hero movies definitely fall into this category as well as they are heavily effects laiden just as their sci-fi and fantasy counter-parts.

This is primarly why the trend is "changing" and the visible part the fans see is the kind of movie that is now getting recongnition -- Like Fantasy and Sci-Fi.

RE: Personal picks for the list...

Even though I just revealed why fantasy and sci-fi films are starting to appeal to the Academy...

Part of me still thinks the best examples of true film making are ones where there are no flashy effects and it is just the strength of the actors and story being told:

-Shattered Glass

-Life as a House

-The Emporer's Club

-Radio

-Saving Private Ryan

-Jerry Maguire

-The Breakfast Club

-Glory

-Field of Dreams

Exactly. She pretty much outshines everyone. Very underrated performance... and Jennifer Hudson won that year! No fair

I agree that Leonardo should've won for The Aviator over Jamie's Ray. But I believe Million Dollar Baby deserved every bit of its Oscar.

Pottyaboutharry I totally agree that Fellowship of the Ring should've won for Best Picture. ROTK was amazing, but Fellowship is a perfect movie.

I agree that Capote was not the most deserving Best Picture nominee.

I can't really comment on the Chicago vs Moulin Rouge debate because I truly love both movies. However, I do think that Catherine Zeta Jones carried that movie all the way to the Best Movie win (as well as her own).

The oscar should have gone to Inglourious Basterds this year for Best Picture.

Last year Mickey Rourke should have won for Best Actor last year. Was very disappointed he didn't win.

Umm yeah so I've said this a thousand times, but Leonardo DiCaprio should have at least been nominated, and should have won, for Titanic AND beat Jamie Foxx for The Aviator. Oh and he should have won this year for Blood Diamond!

Speaking of.. The Aviator should have won over Million Dollar Baby.

Umm yeah so Pearl Harbor should have at least been nominated. Maybe not won because it would be against Lord of the Rings and Moulin Rouge.. but A Beautiful Mind shouldn't have won and Pearl Harbor should have been nominated.

I also think Armegeddon should have been nominated in '99.

Blood Diamond should have been nominated this year. ;) Although I'm quite happy with the winner this year cuz The Departed is like the best movie ever, BD should have been nominated.

Even if I love Raider's of the Lost Ark I can't see it as a acamedy award winner :pout:

I´d given the award to Fellowship of the ring rather than to Return of the King...

I do too. Jason London was so hot in that movie.

One role that I felt was cheated:

I think Leonardo DiCaprio should have won the Oscar for his role of Arnie in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"

Rinko Kikuchi was brilliant in Babel. Hell, she's the only reason to watch that movie in the first place.

I think the fellowship of the ring should have won out of the LotR trilogy but then maybe they just thought theyd give it to them cause it was the last year.

Totally agree with Star Wars, that should have definatey won, but it was great that it got nominated.

I loved Moulin Rouge but in all fairness it was against a Beautiful mind! the weird thing is that Chicago won the next year! I havent seen Chicago but from what I have seen it wasnt as good as Moulin Rouge and it seems weird that people would vote for it after seeing Moulin Rouge!

I was surprised that Blood Diamond didnt get nominated this year, thought it deserved to win, aside from Helen Mirren performance I havent heard much praise for the queen so I was surprised it was nominated.

I hated Capote and it really didnt deserve a best picture nomination last year what with Pride and Prejudice and Walk the line being made in the same year.

I just checked and saw that Clark Gable didnt get an pscar for playing Rett Butler in Gone with the wind, which is just weird I think!

I was also shocked to see that Cat on a hot tin roof won nothing although it was nominated for a few.

 I agree, she's definitely a good actress and all in all it was a good performance but it felt lackluster for a Best Actress Oscar win IMO.

Goodfellas
Wizard of Oz
Brokeback Mountain...crash? seriously? were people blind and deaf? even if you were blind and deaf this film would still be in your face
The Aviator/ Sideways- either one over million dollar baby
Mystic River/ Lost in translation..either one over RotK
The Pianist

I couldn't agree more with this. This was an incredible performance of a broken man. It wasn't flashy or glossy, and it was perfect because of it. Rourke deserved it 100%
