The origin of the nomeclature 'D-500' as it pertains to early Dodges?

I once owned a 241ci. Dodge Hemi engine with Valve covers that were stamped 'Red Ram". Is there a correlation that involves Dodge Hemi's, 'Red Ram' and 'D500'?
