I have to complete two of the essay topics below. Which two topics do you think I can make the strongest points on? I really want to do good on this assignment! Also any pointers you have that I should consider in my writing would be nice. I am kind of leaning towards the first option for one of them, but I am not sure. What do you think?
I. What significance do the lions on the beach have for the old man?
II. "A man can be destroyed but not defeated," says the old man after the first shark attack. At the end of the story, is the old man defeated? Why or why not?
III. The Old Man and the Sea is, essentially, the story of a single character. Indded, other than the old man, old one human being recives any knd of prolonged attention. Discuss the role of Manolin in the novella. Is he necessary to the book?
IV. Hubris is a Greek terms used to define excessive pride or pride to a fault. How does the role of pride drive the main Character in The Old Man and the Sea and how does that pride lead to his being defeated?
V. Discuss how the novella develops its theme. Choose one from the themes of the honor in the struggle, deafeat and death; Pride as the source greatness and determination; Luck vs. Skill; or Youth vs. Old Age.
Thanks.
