the o/d light on my mazda starts flashing when vehicle is not warmed up... what does

it mean? 2000 protege... and in the morning or whenver its parked for about more than 3 hours.. the light starts flashing which manifests itself by making the transmission shift REALLY slow and the car going REALLY slow as well.... what could it be? electric or what?
