The nitrite levels in my fish tank are still dangerously high… what else can I do?

I have a 60 litre fish tank (for those not metric that is 13.2 UK gallons or 15.8 US gallons). It has an internal filtration system and I am now in the third week of running it without fish in order to work through new tank syndrome.

I am not going to be using marine or tropical fish… just a couple of cold water fish.

Worryingly my nitrite levels are still dangerously high… what else can I do?

On the 1st day I added 20 ml of Stress Zyme® in order to kick start the tanks’ biological filtration (I also added a little fish food).

On the 7th day I added a further 20 ml of Stress Zyme®

And on the 14th I added a further 20 ml of Stress Zyme®

I am now past the 3 week mark and the nitrite levels in the tank are registering 3.3 – 33 mg/l (instead of the safe limit of less than 0.3 mg/l)

Given it is a new tank and there are no fish in it yet I have not been conducting any partial water changes… will this help in reducing the nitrite levels or will it just dilute the already low biological filter bacteria.

Is there anything else I can do?

Bobby
