The Next Palm - Life Drive Revealed

Unknowing

Here is a link to a 1SRC report of the next Palm device. If you read the entire story it will take you to several other web sites that are showing pictures of the device.

No scoop here - just providing additional link.

Allegedly the device has a 20GB hard drive is running Cobalt. Pictures vary depending upon which site your looking at as well as the specs.

Supposedly coming out the week of April 18th?

Might this be a replacement for my T5? Have to wait and see what reality reveals.....back to the beer.

;)

Thanks for the info.

I sure hope this is the real thing. I am a little hesitant about getting too excited over this because of some of the hoaxes we've had in the past.

It would be nice to have 4GB and both bluetooth and wireless LAN on the same device. It also looks as though the slider is gone.

Well, I will wait and see what develops from this.

And here is the link to the rabroad discussion.

If this rumor were true, I can imagine Palm's reasoning behind it. They saw the huge success of the iPod. What if they made a PDA that looked like an iPod with lots of room for MP3s? Plus you also have the bonus of being able to play movies.

The first problem would be the battery. For it to have any kind of reasonable playing time, say 8 hours, it would weigh like a brick.

I've been following the rumors closely but still find it hard to get excited. Talk is that the LifeDrive PDA is pretty thick. I hope it's pocketable.

I'm also interested in the rumored Zire 73. Possible specs: 1.3 megapixel digital camera, 320x480 LCD screen, 64MB of RAM, Bluetooth, WiFi.

Here's hoping...

It is appears to have a very slick image. All of the benefits look exciting, but I also have a hestiancy to get overly excited - remember I am from Missouri and you have got to SHOW ME! LOL
I am also wondering about the thickness and overall size myself. It certainly will be exciting to see how this plays out.

Now as for a technical question - I do not know, I have a T5. Is the OS that the T5 has Palm Garnet? If so, I am will not be disappointed as the article states because that will make an easier transition to this new product.....

Carol,

The Garnet OS is just another name for Palm OS 5.x. It's disappointing that Palm has still not been able to roll out OS 6, which is supposed to have many improvements including multitasking. Palm announced on March 18 that they would be late with all their new products and that some would be delayed until near the end of Palm's first quarter, which ends June 30. Given Palm's continual schedule slippage in releasing new products, I don't have much faith in that date either. As I've written before, if Palm doesn't get on the stick and get a killer OS 6 product out there soon, Palm is going to disappear from the PDA market.

What about releasing a killer OS 5 device ? :D - I guess Palm STILL hasn't released one.

I mean, I work in the construction field and rely a lot on my Tungsten T (reflective screens - aren't 'em good in the sunlight?). I switch frequently from Docs to Go to RepliGo to Calculator to Voice Recorder to Calendar to Notepad. And although I have found myself thinking of certain situations in which multitasking could be helpful, particularily copying/pasting between DTG and Notepad, not having it simply is not critical. If it were, I would have switched to Windows Mobile.

I think that is like switching between Windows and Mac...you need to learn to work in a different way instead of taking your known habits (and software in certain cases) with you into the other OS.

I remember getting all "jazzed" about the T5 . . . all I can say is this thing looks fantastic - something more along the lines of a "solid tool;" with a "proper" microdrive and 4GB and WiFi and no slider - it's something I would grab if the OS is "workable."

It may be more friendly, useable and reliable than the T5's OS and more accepting too . . . time'll tell. Looks like a solid unit but we're staring at an Etch-A-Sketch at this point. Good find, Mooseman. At $500 it would be worth it since many of you bought WiFi/battery sled for the T3 and spent the same; I figure we can make it up on the cheaper SD Card prices plus the fact it's WORTH it for that kind of memory "leap - provided at least 500MB is actually "USEABLE!" HA HA HA!

Maybe they mean it's 32MB of useable and 3.996 GB freee for recordings of "Old Man River."

All of this hype could be vaporware but if it isn't then the return of PalmOne might be imminent.

I've been contemplating the purchase of either an Ipod or Sandisk 1GB MP3 player just because it's easier for traveling to have "dedicated" devices in my mind....especially battery life reasons.

But if this P1 "device" is going to be a reality then I'll hold off and review the true functionality and battery life.

I'd like to see a replaceable battery with such a device and since the vaporware rumors are always just that rumors......;)
