The new verizon iphone 4g?

Im from cyprus (europe) and I was wondering whats all the fuss going on about Verizon.. whats Verizon and how is this going to affect me here in europe.. Im going to buy the new iphone soon as it comes out.. do I have to have a 4g card ? I don't think we have those in cyprus yet.. sorry Im a bit confused.. thanks in advance
