The New Imperialism
Throughout history Imperialism has occurred all around the world, and has been determined by many factors. The New Imperialism that took place in the late 1800's was influenced by two main factors, the Industrial Revolution and the development of technology in the West. The vast resources of Asia and Africa, impulsed the West to take over these two continents in the struggle to exploit them as much as possible for their own wealth, with the excuse of Westernization and its Supposed benefits.
Western domination over Africa and Asia was fueled by the need of raw materials and resources for the industries that were developing in Europe. The west exploited these continents with the excuse they were civilizing them and their culture. A perfect example of this were the English in Africa, through the Royal Niger company, which supposedly in a treaty offered protection and money to the tribes of the Niger river delta for their land, which was rich in resources. These tribes couldn't even read the treaty they were signing, "We understand the said Royal Niger company have full power to mine, farm and build in any portion of our country."(Human record, pg.92) This type of exploitation was common throughout the new imperialism, but it was all done in a way that it seemed as beneficial for the colonized, as for them. Technological Advancements were very important in the development of the new imperialism. Inventions such as the maxim machine gun and the stearaboats were key for the Europeans too reach their objectives in Asia and Africa. Stearaboats were essential for the transport of gooRAB and provisions, all the way from Europe to the colonies. Macgregor Laird states the importance of stearaboats at this time, "By this invention every river is laid open to us, time and distance are shortened."(Tools of Empire, pg.17). The greatness of this invention and the possibilities it brings is fundamental for the development of the imperialism. The maxim machine gun was also very important in Western domination over Africa and Asia. It's power and capacity was essential for the Westerners to control and dominate the colonized people.
Throughout the new Imperialism they're where some key things that gave such power to the Westerners, without those elements the new imperialism wouldn't have taken place, and succeed. The idea of the new imperialism was guided to the expansion of the western culture throughout the world. The western culture at that time was one of greed and power, were the poor worked for the rich, and were the rich controlled the poor .The industrial revolution was not good for everybody it was only good for those in power. As well as in the colonies the new Imperialism only benefited the Westerners, as in all imperialism the benefited is that who has more power and more control. The way the Industrial revolution has shaped the world we live in, is very simple it has made everybody think that thee who has more power is better than someone else. It has created a way of thinking that the world is based on wealth and whoever has more, is more successful or happier. It has created ideologies such as communism which represents the the beliefs of those who lived those time, and thought of them as a burden for society. It has created Leaders such as Fidel Castro which have fought against Imperialism and Capitalism a whole lifetime, believing that what was done was wrong.
