The best stat available today is +/- ratio: the amount of points a team scores and allows when a particular player is on the court. You can view it here: http://basketballvalue.com/teamplayers.php?year=2007-2008&team=LAL
The numbers:
Kobe: +10.42
Garnett: +9.45, Pierce: 10.51
LeBron: +10.98
Howard: +16.88
Chris Paul: -0.42; Peja S.: +12.39
KG is just as valuable to his team as Pierce, something I've been telling people.
No one on the Lakers, Cavs, or Magic are nearly as valuable as their top players.
TEAMS OUTSCORE THE HORNETS WHEN CHRIS PAUL IS ON THE COURT.
People like to quote Paul's steals as evidence he is a good defender. Grabbing 2 steals out of 110 possessions every game is really something to brag about? Defense is *every* time down the court, people. Paul is a terrific PG; but teams score more points *against* the Hornets when he's on the court.
Basketball is a game of offense AND defense.
Kobe....LeBron....Howard -- your only legitimate MVP candidates for 2007-2008.
As the title says, here's *A* measure. it's not to be taken as the *only* measure. Jamison, Howard -- they're not exactly leading their team to the best record in their conference.
People should basically use these numbers to help differentiate between the top candidates. We all know who those candidates are.
And it's not a knock on KG to talk about Pierce....PP has just been that terrific this year. Just my humble opinion, but 1 team having 2 legitimate MVP candidates takes votes away from each other.
Yung Baller: player value stats are not a *new* stat. Perhaps new to you, and most transient fans who only know points and assists.
By the way, if you bothered to click the link, you'll see the numbers are current as of games played on April 12, 2008. That's pretty much eons AFTER the Gasol trade. Gasol is +5 for the Lakers. I'm gonna have to pretty much disagree with you that ONE DAY OLD is to be considered outdated.
