The Mr Clean of Yesteryear?

back in the 1960s, my uncle was a painter, he would soak items in Mr Clean over night to act as a paint stripper and the paint would litterally fall off.I would also soak greasy car parts in Mr Clean and the next day they were spotless. Today's Mr clean does none of this. What was in Mr Clean back then that made it so good that has been removed?

I assume just like everything else they have watered it down.
