The movie or the novel?

I just finished watching My Sister's Keeper and I felt it was ok. They had left out a few pivotal moments (the movie left out the fact that Jesse is an arsonist and a forgotten member of the family...what was with that, by the way?) ...I read the book beforehand and I thought it was quite impressive. I'm just interested to know what you guys think about novels that are turned into movies...

I get that they have to summarise a 300-400 page novel into 2hrs bt are they better? Do the movies capture you in the same way the novels did? More simply which do you prefer: reading the novel or watching the movie?

I feel disappointed as sometimes the movies of some novels (like The Last Song [terrible movie but a poignant novel], Dear John, My Sister's Keeper, etc) don't capture the essence of the original storyline...what do you guys think?
