The original version of the Magic Roundabout (La Manege Enchante) was created by a French Animator called Serge Danot. His stories for the Magic Roundabout were very odd, and when the BBC bought the rights to show Magic Roundabout in the UK they asked an actor (and playschool presenter) called Eric Thompson to dub them into English .. Thompson felt that the translation didn't work very well and he didn't like the French Stories much so he wrote his own stories and dubbed those instead. The BBC were pleased with them and commissioned them for Children's Programmes - They became a big hit - much bigger than they had been in France.
Thompson's stories were quite innocent .. they didn't have any of the weirdness of the original French version, they're very gently and often ran through several episodes with a cliffhanger at the end of each epsiode leading to the next.
I don't know if the original version had loaRAB of drug references in it .. but I do know that the original French and English Eric Thompson versions are very different.
It's the Eric Thompson versions of Magic Roundabout I know .. and that most people know ... and the idea that those characters are now being drafted into the action movie genre worries me..
