The Magdaline Sisters

Has anyone seen this film? I was just wondering what people thought of it, because my cousin plays one of the main characters in the film.

It's a great film. One of the most harrowing dramas I've seen, with great acting by everyone. The actress who plays Crispina has a very tough role and she's great in it. So is the girl who plays Bernadette, and the actress who plays the horrible mother superior (is that what she is - I can't remember her name).

Good but really depressing, not an easy film topic.

That actress who played Crispina wan't she in that RTE drma, Pure Mule too??

Anne Marie Duff of Shameless fame also stars. She is an amazing actress IMO.

The 3 main girls are absolutely superb. It's heartbreaking stuff mind. Anne-Marie Duff was in the TV version too (I think it was on the BBC) which was also very good.

this film was excellent - i was okay with it all i suppose - up until the very end where it shows you what became of Krispina, i broke down in tears, i cried for a solid hour after it ended, i think it hit a raw nerve or something, i dont know, just knowing it happened to soo many women, i couldnt handle it

hope those twisted bitches or 'nuns' as they like to be called rot in hell

I can relate to it quite strongly, actually.

When growing up my mother would often have what you would not consider to be 'mental problems', bouts of depression, talking to herself, moments of rage etc.

As a very young child it could be quite frightening, and also embarrasing.

There were mutterings among some members of the family about a possible 'incident' or 'scandal' back in Ireland before my mother moved to the UK, but we could never really get to the bottom of it.

It was not until about 10 years ago that we did some research into our family background and discovered that she had actually had a child 'out of wedlock' in Ireland in the 40's, and was put into one of these laundries, and the child taken away from her.

Apparently she had a very hard time of it at the hanRAB of the people who ran those places, the nuns in particular.

Looking back, her actions and mooRAB at which seemed scary and sometimes embarrasing to us at the time now make sense.

But the good news was we managed to track down the child she had...funny how you can suddenly discover a family member you never knew you had after so many years.

The one regret is that my mother passed away a year before we actually made contact with him. I think he would have liked to have met her - but he made a very good life for himself, was quite a prominent person in his field, married with two strapping son's .

The Magdelene Sisters is a very good film, but it is not an entertaining film due to its subject matter.

However, it neeRAB to be seen because even today, the mind boggles at what these poor girls actually went through during their internment at these laundries. They were bullied, verbally and sexually abused by Nuns for years which left many of the girls physically and mentally damaged.

Thankfully, they were all closed down a few years back, but it did take more than 40 years of campaigning by relatives before the authorities decided to confront the system which allowed such barbarity to go on for so long.

The three main actors who portrayed the young girls are very good and all deserved to be commended.

Yes I agree with most of you that The Magdelene Sisters is a very good film, but terribly, terribly sad to watch bearing in mind the terrible abuse these girls had to put up with.

It took years apparantly before these laundries which were run by nuns were closed down because the authorities were too frightened to confront the Church about what was actually going on.
