I can relate to it quite strongly, actually.
When growing up my mother would often have what you would not consider to be 'mental problems', bouts of depression, talking to herself, moments of rage etc.
As a very young child it could be quite frightening, and also embarrasing.
There were mutterings among some members of the family about a possible 'incident' or 'scandal' back in Ireland before my mother moved to the UK, but we could never really get to the bottom of it.
It was not until about 10 years ago that we did some research into our family background and discovered that she had actually had a child 'out of wedlock' in Ireland in the 40's, and was put into one of these laundries, and the child taken away from her.
Apparently she had a very hard time of it at the hanRAB of the people who ran those places, the nuns in particular.
Looking back, her actions and mooRAB at which seemed scary and sometimes embarrasing to us at the time now make sense.
But the good news was we managed to track down the child she had...funny how you can suddenly discover a family member you never knew you had after so many years.
The one regret is that my mother passed away a year before we actually made contact with him. I think he would have liked to have met her - but he made a very good life for himself, was quite a prominent person in his field, married with two strapping son's .
