The magazines have failed me. Need a completely new approach. Suggestions please?

Whenever I ask "how does one make new friends" I'm sick of everyone, friends, magazines, internet giving me that one liner of "If you want to expand your social circle why not try an evening class or local interest group"

I have no friends anywhere near me. I'm not in touch with anyone from school, many have moved and many are people I don't want anything to do with. When I was at University I had loads of friends and had no problem making them. We still keep in touch but are scattered all over the place so we only get to meet up a few times a year.

I've tried evening classes, I've tried these "local" interest groups, I've volunteered and I've joined clubs. I have taken part in every sort of organised "meet" you can come up with. What have I achieved from this? A handful of much older acquaintances. Nice enough people but none of them ever want to hang out or go to the cinema or grab a subway or meet for a drink in wetherspoons because its not really their thing.

I've had enough of these "meets" which can be a complete nightmare to get to without a car. Does anyone have any other ideas for meeting new people who can potentially become friends?

And don't give me the "just move somewhere else" line. If I cant afford a car then how the hell can I afford to "just move" anywhere else let alone a city.
