The Keep:Should it be re-made?

I was watching the classic film from the 80's The Keep the other night and i couldn't help but think that this film would be perfect to be re-made today?, with up to date effects and a fantastic and creepy story i think it would be brilliant, what does everyone else think?, and what other films could be better re-made?

Have to confess to being a bit of a Michael Mann fan.

This is hardly his best movie - it has some good moments, great production design, some good ideas but it just does not really hold together. I never really understood exactly what Scott Glenn's characters link to the Keep was supposed to be.

I love the atmospheric opening sequence, and the massive set (actually a stone quarry in Wales), and some of the early attack sequences by the unseen Molasar were very well done.

As I understand it, there were a lot of production problems with it, their main special effects guy (Wally Veevers) died before the movie was completed, and various editorial decisions and changes were made to the detriment of the movie.

But the biggest dissapointment has to be the realisation of the creature, Molasar. Big things were planned for the appearance of Molasar, but in the end they went with a guy in a suit.

So it is a very compromised movie, and a rather confused one.

In fact, rather than a remake I would rather see a restoration and a decent dvd/blu ray release. Apparently it was drastically edited down from a 2 hour plus movie, and Mann has expressed interest in restoring it occasionally.

And it would be great to have a decent looking and sounding copy of it. It has never been officially released on DVD (though there are some companies claiming to have copies...), but it does get the occasional tv airing. I only have an old video copy of it myself. (I know there are apparently DVD copies out there, but as far as I know they are not good quality and pan and scan)

Then again...Mann did remake his old telemovie LA Takedown as Heat in the 90's, and a darn fine movie that turned out to be. So maybe it could happen, but only if Mann himself would go back and make the movie he wanted to make in the first place.

Not really Zombies, to be fair. Mann went for a more mysterious entity being held inside the keep.

In fact, the original novel it was based on was called more of a 'nazi's vs vampires' story rather than zombies.

A new adaptation was mentioned in recent years but everything's gone quiet on that front.
Actually, faults aside I think the combination of Mann's direction, atmosphere and Tangerine Dream's soundtrack will be hard to beat unless, yes, the Mann himself gets to have another try (and hopefully 'keep' the soundtrack).
I think Mann has talked of releaseing a director's cut at some point.
The version shown on Sky HD at the weekend didn't look sharp at all. I guess little attention was paid to the transfer.

I kind of agree, but this film was original when it first came out, still is in may ways...always felt it was a bit of a lost opportunity as somewhere in there is a really good film...blame the studio for butchering it ! Very atmospheric film.
