The Jeep Army Star History?

Ok, Im not sure how to put this so I will put this as best as I can. I have an XJ jeep that I would like to put army stars on, but I am curious what the meaning of the stars are becuase i have found three variations of the star. These are the three I found.

I am also curious what the numbers stand for on the hoods of some older jeeps. I think it is the ID number? For example:
41MB-03YJ

I was curious what each number in the ID number stands for. Do they coordinate like a VIN number or are they just random?
 
The star was just to identify the vehicle as American. Wouldn't want to blow up the wrong guys would you? You're right about the numbers on the hood.
