the issues in education?

“It appears that the home environment, the quality of the neighborhood, and the types of friends and associates one has are much more influential than is the quality of the school facilities or the skills of teachers. In effect, then, the areas that schools have the least control over—social influence and development—are the most important in determining how well an individual will do in school” (Tischler, 2004:370).

What is your reaction to these statements (agree, disagree…why)? Why are these social influences so powerful? Can schools address these areas, and if so, how?
