Here goes!
- the kind of music to sit back or lay down to and feel like sighing for a while. A sort of good or bad or whatever feeling: music which soothes and/or does whatever to a mood/mind-set/thought/feeling - something genuine and 'soulful'. With emotion. The kind of moving, beautiful music that could otherwise take somebody weeks to find, if they'd ever even find it at all.
That sort of feel or vibe or style that's hard to explain?
It's probably obvious, but the voice and the production, together, need to just 'work'.
I dunno how they're supposed to work, but I think the artists and songs below are great examples of 'perfect' voices blending with deep, soft, hard hitting production. For me, they all work on another level to most music, and I'd highly recommend checking out as many of the artists below - if not the artists, at least a few of the songs; they're all incredible.
You've probably already figured out that the emphasis is on feeling. If not, I just told you.
Anyway!
I guess everybody can read this question and listen to some music that you always wanna hear when you sit down/lay back or take a slow walk, and just think/feel 'good' - in the sense that you appreciate and enjoy the feeling, even when you probably can't describe how you feel.
That's when you should know it's something you can really listen to over and over and connect with on a more personal level than a catch beat or a funny line.
It's hard to describe, but I hope you kind of get what I mean?
I think I wanna find a piece that feels like a complete whole, because sometimes (most of the time, actually) it's when I love music, and I think particularly Hip Hop, the 'most'. Even more so when I can genuinely feel something, and whatever it is, it's more an experience and a moment than a chain of thoughts to digest: I guess it's the music that brings about those times when I can just breathe and go through the experience of feeling.
Something sort of 'over the edge: flight and abandon'.
btw. I know I post the same question over and over but
this way I guess more people should see whatever music comes out of the whole 'list' thing.
Besides, I suppose somebody who could be looking for this sort of question, and waiting to make a contribution, could easily miss a throw away question in the massive lump of letters that floods the RHH section.
So yeah. I'm gonna keep posting, and posting and posting to make a great list - and this list can honestly include anything. Although it probably has an underground feel, any mainstream music can find it's way onto 'the list'.
- I say 'the list' as if it's some comprehensive, definitive 'thing'.
It's really not, but hopefully it's gonna get nearer and nearer to resembling something along those lines; namely something that brings together a wide range of tastes and experiences.
Anyway, I should probably shut up before I bore half the section to tears and drive us all to trolling the Religion and Spirituality section.
And if you've managed to read this far, and somehow stay interested in whatever it is I'm trying to say, then I owe you a massive thank you, mainly because I'm taking way too long to write this, and I should probably just shut up and get on with it.
So, here's the list of artists so far, with a few tracks alongside:
Mos Def - White drapes/Cream of the planet
Sage Francis - Going back to rehab
Blu and Exile - Below the heavens/Amnesia
Shad - Brother/Untitled
The Loyalists - This is for hip hop
Atmosphere - The river/Painting
Lupe - Intruder alert
Living Legends - Remember who you are
Kno - Death is Silent/La Petite Mort
Black Star - Thieves in the Night
Debaser - I don't think so
Jay Z - This can't be life/D'evils
Murs - Pain/Walk like a man
Bad Neighbors - Bonus track 5
Common - The Light
Grieves - He won't answer
Michael Franti - Hey world
Citizen Cope - Son's gonna rise/Bullet and a target
Brother Ali - Walking Away
Tupac Shakur - Me against the world
Madvillain - Accordion
Obviously, it could already be a lot bigger, but it's not.
Soon, I'll add loads more artists and songs to 'the list' - but even when I'm done, there's so many songs out there that I don't know about that I could probably never do this on my own.
so yeah. keep answering cos this list might actually turn out to be kind of massive and cool for everybody and i'm babbling and for some reason i've completely abandoned all grammar and punctuation and to be honest, after this marathon post, i'll be glad to copy and paste the question next time! but whatever
Thanks! :]]
