The Holocaust: The Devaluing of Human Life

The German Holocaust is a vivid part of American history. People
try to deny that the Holocaust ever happened, but in all reality there is
more proof then not of what has happened in Germany. The Holocaust is a
simple example of the devaluing of human life. The question is could a
Holocaust of this magnitude happen today? I feel that this could happen
and I can see it happening in our society today.
To express my point on how this is happening today I would like to
use the movie Schindler's List and events that have been in the news lately.

In the movie Schindler's List, the devaluing of human life is so
tremendous that people want to forget that the Holocaust has ever happened.
In the beginning of the movie the Nazi party is rounding up all the Jewish
people to take them to camps. Even if the Soldiers knew that it what they
were doing was wrong, they still went and rounded these people up. The
Nazi Soldiers did this because they were afraid of loosing their lives if
they did not obey. The act of taking people, whole families, out of their
homes takes away their freedom. When the Nazi Soldiers took away the Jews
freedom they devalued their lives. Devalued in the sense, that the Jewish
people had no choice in the matter they had to go with the Soldiers or be
killed. And because they Nazis took everything that they were looking
forward away.
Another place that the Nazi Soldiers devalued the Jewish people's
lives is when they senselessly executed millions of Jewish people with out
any reason. First they killed the people that could no longer perform the
work that the soldiers have given them. These were generally the elderly
and the sick Jewish people. By committing this violent act the Nazi
Soldiers devalued the Jewish people's lives. The soldiers took something,
lives, that were not theirs and killed these innocent people.
The Nazi also killed innocent children. They took away the dreams
that they had. They saw the Jewish children as well as the Jewish adults,
as people that were capable of spreading a disease that Hitler created in
his own mind as a threat. But the Germans did not want anyone else that
was Jewish allowed to carry on with their lives. The Nazi Soldiers and
Hitler decided that the best way to cure this is to eliminate all the
Jewish people.
Eliminating all the Jewish people was the way that Hitler came up
with so that Germany could get a hold of their social and economic problems.
With Hitler's ideas to eliminate the Jews, devalued the lives of so many
people. The Jewish people that were obviously killed and the people that
survived. The people that survived have to deal with the pain of their
loved ones not being there and what they went trough, all the torture and
extremes that their bodies went through. The Jewish people have a lot of
things to over come and this massive loss is just the beginning.
To bring everyone out of the past and into the present I would like
to present some of today's issues. The Devaluing of life did not just
happen in the time of the Holocaust but it is also happening in today's
society.
An example of this would be the senseless killing of an eight-year-
old girl in Florida. This little girl was stabbed numerous times by a
fourteen-year-old boy, her neigrabroador. Then this young adult stashed this
young girl under his bed and left her to rot. (Nov. 11, ‘98 TMJ4)
This is just the beginning of the downfall of society. When we
have young children/adults killing on another for no reason. This young
adult may know what he did was wrong but he went ahead and did it anyway.
This young person took the life of another child that had dreams and
destroyed her life.
I feel the only justice that is going to come out of this horrible
crime is that this boy will be tried as an adult. According to the Florida
Law this child can and probably will receive the death penalty. The death
penalty will prevent this child from committing any more crimes of this
type ever again.
Also this young man will serve as an example that today's society
will mot put up with this type of behavior.
Also another senseless crime was taken out on a Doctor that
performs abortions. This Doctor was killed in his home because someone did
not like the profession that he was in, performing abortions, (Oct.'98
TMJ4). This Doctor was not killed because he did something wrong but
because someone did not agree with what he was doing.
This group of people that are killing these Doctors think that what
they are doing is for the good of society. When in fact this is not good
for today's society. They are actually hurting society. These acts of
violence need to be stopped, and the people of society need to set the
stage that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.
Another thing that people do not realize is that when people have
their elder parents in a retirement home. Some of these people put their
parents in these homes and then leave them there to die. This is another
way that society is leaning towarRAB a downfall. People, as outsiders, do
not look at these parents in the elderly housing as a threat. People use
these homes to their advantage because they do not want to look after their
parents. They figure that the staff of the home can look on them from time
to time.
This is not good for our elderly society because they have so much
to give and we can all learn something from them if we just sit and listen.
Sure they are cranky and uptight but that is the way that they are and once
you get past that these elderly people are just as normal as you or I.
They need the extra help but that is normal for these older people because
they can not do it all by themselves anymore.
There are many different similarities between the Nazi Holocaust
and the issues that are happening today. One similarities is that people
are still taking lives that are not theirs and destroying them. People
today as well as when the Holocaust occurred knew what is right and what is
wrong. Also the Holocaust is looked down upon because so many lives were
taken all at one time. From today their things are happening gradually
with one person here and another person there and so on.
In my opinion, on could a Holocaust of the Nazi era happen again I
would have to say yes it could happen. We can see that it is happening
gradually, the only problem is that no one is looking at these types of
killings in a ways that could be a Holocaust. These are all things that I
believe devalue human life and they need to be stopped. I think that
today's society neeRAB to say that they are not going to up with these types
of behaviors and then move on from there.
