The High Price of Theater Going

I don't see the point of going to the theater anymore. If I was on my own or just with my friends, I wouldn't mind.

But too many stranger idiots can't pipe down and keep quiet.
 
If I have to pay for my own ticket, I usually go to the matinee showings because they're $6 instead of the usual $9 (or $9.50, depending on which theater). I only go to the movies at night if I'm going with my parents, or if my friends are treating me. But, my dad's been getting some gift certificates for the movies from his company, so I guess I'll be going more often.

Now, I only go to the movies if there's a "I'll die if I don't watch it right this second!" movie released. If not, I'll just wait until it comes out on DVD.

Even the student discounts blow. :lol: 50 cents isn't even half a trip to the vending machine. :pout:
 
Prices are so high, that I'm very selective with what movies I go and see. I pick ones I know that I either really want to see or will be best view on the big screen. The rest I just wait to see them come out onto dvd.
 
The most I've ever paid for a movie ticket was 9 dollars. I'm too ashamed to say what movie it was:blush:
 
I live in Toronto, Canada (pretty urbanised) and prices have been steadily going up for ages now. The multiplex thing really kicked in about maybe six or seven years ago, and since then, they've dominated the scene. Smaller theatres in suburbia have kinda all faded out and died. They used to be really cheap, adult was $4 and children was $2.50 but since those disappeared, they've been replaced by these behemoths that are like 20 theatres or something. Evenings are outrageously expensive (think $13.50/person) and even during the days, it's like nine, ten bucks. Tuesday tickets aren't much better, usually the same price as matinees.

However, there has been a rise in cheaper movie theatres across the greater metropolitan area (Rainbow Cinemas), and that's like $4.50 during the day and $7.50 in the evenings which is decent. Downtown theatres are still doing well because they play all the small obscure films that the cityphites and cinephiles love, and those aren't too expensive...maybe $6-8 or so.
 
I'm in the same situation, i only pay student prices right now Thank god i'm small lol, but full-prices are a rip-off, especially when you add snacks into that too :shrug:
 
I used to work at an AMC Theaters in downtown Chicago. It was $7 for students/matinee, $6.50 for children/seniors, and $9.50 for adults.

The managers also told us that the theater got next to NOTHING from the tickets. Most of their profit comes from the sale of concessions.

I wonder if big cities have more taxes, which is why they charge higher prices? I know our ticket prices included sales tax and other taxes in the price...so maybe that's why?
 
It's a shame, in the early 1900's theatre prices used to be cheap because it was a way for people to escape and have fun for a few hours, and they wanted everyone to be able to attend and of course the budgets of the actors/films weren't so great.

Now we have to be charged an arm and a leg to help pay for the huge budgets of movies....

It's sad...I used to go to the movies at least once/twice a week...Now I can only go once every month (if i'm lucky).
 
well over here, where i live.
the normal theaters like now, the weekends are $10, they just upped it a couple weeks ago..it used to be $8.
so my friends and i always go during the weekdays cuz they're much cheaper, its $5 during the weekday and u get unlimited popcorn and pop together for only $5 but then u'll have to get out of the theater to get some more and u might miss out something. haha
but we have like a vintage old theater that its only $3.50 during the weekends and i think $2 during the week..but they only can show three movies and its usually like a month after they came out in the normal theaters..but its not so bad at all...
i was soo mad when i came in one weekend night and saw that they upped their prices..i didnt even have enough money for popcorn!!! i was pissed!!!
 
I hate the fact that it costs 10.25 to go to the movies. There are dvds that are cheaper than that. I would resent it less if at least there was a matinee price. Like $6 before 6pm. It's so ridiculous. I used just go to a movie just for the hell of it but now that they are so expensive now I weigh whether or not I go to a movie more carefully. I hate spending 10.25 on a movie that didn't turn out to be good. I always have to decide before I see it if a movie looks like it's worth the money.
 
I usually pay about $19 before 6 pm (for 2 of us) for an english movie (which includes tickets and popcorn ) and for a non english one its anywhere between $8 to $12 per ticket at all times.
 
Oh we have a dollar theater where I live, so if you wait a month, you can see any movie for just a buck (even though they kill you to buy snacks) or 50 cents on Tuesdays. And we also have a five dollar special everyday at the regular theater for any movie showing from 4-6. After 6 is ridiculously priced, so I never try that (and yes, for me, $8.25 would be that ridiculous price).

And our indie theater only charges 4 bucks all the time, which is nice, cause they do show films like TDK or other films like that in the summer when they have an open slot.

But seriously, unless the movie is fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a Blockbuster night for me. Too expensive, even at a dollar (because I can't resist the snacks) to waste money on any film.
 
Rarely will I pay non-matinee prices. The only time I've done that, IIRC, is for an animated movie I wanted to see with the possibility of as few little kids as possible. Otherwise I pay for matinee showings ($5.50) or, more often, pay the special first matinee of the day ($4, used to be $3.75). :look: Thank goodness for working evenings, so I can go to the 11 a.m. to noon showings.

The cheapest I've paid is 50 cents (although recently it went up to 75) for the first matinee at the $1 theater. If it's a movie I have to see again or one I'm not sure I'll like, I'll see it at this theater. The problem with the cheap theater is the seats aren't very comfortable and, to sit in the back row (which I usually do if there will be a lot of people), is miles away from the screen.
 
Well here it's 6.50, but that's if I want to see a movie that just came out.
I usually wait until it goes to the dollar movie, but sometimes if I reallllly want to see the movie I go to the expensive one. At the dollar movie I can get in the movie, get a drink and popcorn, and I'm usually one of the only ones in the theater all for about 8 dollars. Pretty cool. :)
 
Well the prices have been rising here(in Finland) all the time...but nowadays it's usually 10 € in the weekend and Fridays after five pm and 6 -7€ during the day on weekdays....I'm not sure what it is in $ but I think it's pretty close...The prices are very high, but movie theaters are like my favorite place in the world and it's like one of my few "vices" so I allow it to myself...;)
