The Great Native American or Indian Debate?

Firstly i mean NO disrespect to any people or their heritage,

but

do you think it is right for "native americans", or anybody else, to claim themselves "indians" when in no way is their bloodline or ancestry connected in any way to India?

I feel that since calling native americans, indians, (being a mistake made hundreds of years ago), is not only foolish but is a loss of heritage, especially for native americans who call themselves indians!

and also should actual indians (you know, like from india) be mad?

i myself am not indian or native american so if there is something i am missing please enlighten me!
I am absolutely willing to change my veiw point but as it stands it seems a little rediculous!

You had better go back to the history books and study the origins of the term "Indians"
to refer to the indigenous people of North America. Those people didn't call themselves "Indians:" They called themselves by their nation names--Cherokee, Iroquois, Shawnee etc. It was Columbus and the Spansih Conquistadors and those European interlopers who came after them that created that label.

And that is partly why many indigenous Americans in recent decades prefer to be called Native Americans or First Nations. "Indian" is definitely not a term they originated, and many do not embrace it.

But then you seem to understand that, so what's your case? .
