Prompt:
Jay Gatsby owned a book in his youth titled Hopalong Cassidy, a western story with a romantic vision. In this book, he wrote a list of virtues by which he would live. These guidelines closely resemble Benjamin Franklin’s Thirteen Virtues. Based on your knowledge of Franklin’s work and your understanding of Gatsby’s character, argue whether or not Jay Gatsby has lived up to his boyhood vision of a well-rounded man. Discuss Franklin’s purpose in writing his list in comparison to Gatsby. Also, include in your argument the element of romanticism, meaning was Gatsby’s romantic vision (his idealism) possible within the setting of the story?

This was my teachers exaple of a thesis

Jay Gatsby lived in a time of moral decay where it was impossible for him to realize his boyhood dreams because he got involved in illegal activities, neglected his original plans, and became over taken by his love for Daisy.
