...part of an aging gear box. Why? I have a 2005 Mazda Tribute. I am not the first owner; it had roughly 35,000 miles on it when I purchased it. I bought it in May 2009. In winter of 2009 and now this winter, when it gets below freezing outside the gear shift freezes. The dealership said it was just due to an aging gear box, but this doesn't add up to me. I'm not a car expert, but they couldn't really explain why the aging gear box would only be an issue in below freezing temperatures. I've tried googling answers thinking that it may be a common problem, but I couldn't really find anything. The only close answer was that if something had been spilled in there and not cleaned up, then that could be what is freezing. I haven't spilled anything on the gear shift, but the first owner could have. However, the freezing is in the button that you push before you can move the shifter, so it would seem to me that it may be something in the upper part of the mechanism. Help please!
