the exorcism of emily rose

I thought it was one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a good long while. Beautifully shot --almost Dario Argento-esque in style and use of colour. I guess the main concern coming into a 'possession' story post-Exorcist is that nothing will ever top the original in terms of ...well, anything. This movie turns the sub-genre on its head, with the body of the narrative taking place in a courtroom and the actual horror elements being told via flashback --and of the non-confusing variety. The direction is subtle and assured; something which is a surprise when you find out the director learnt about the story whilst researching a Jerry Bruckheimer movie! As for the possession/exorcism scenes.. they are genuinely scary; and about as far away --in comparison-- from the infamous 1973 movie as a filmmaker could get without alienating the audience. Performances all-round are top-notch and relative newcomer Jennifer Carpenter is a revelation.. no pun intended :-)

It was alright, some scenes sent a chill down my spine but it's not really scary, just creepy, disturbing. The courtroom element was quite interesting. I also liked how it turns out she is possessed by all these evil figures from the past. I think it was average.

I feel the same way. There were so many bad or average reviews for it but I thought it was perfectly balanced - not too much horror, not too much courtroom an the cast was just superb.

My friend swear that would sh*t my pants and that it was a brilliant film. I watched it on saturday and it was not scary at all, it was an ok film i preferred saw 2 or hostel. I would rent it if i were you.

had to bump thread as i watched it friday night. well half watched it, dont care what anyone else said it scared the bejezus out of me and saturday and sunday morning i have woken up to look at the clock as it turned to three. spooky

i had absolutely no expectations of this movie at all. I thoguht it would some kind of crappy Exocist remake or something. I only went to see it because 2 frienRAB asked me to go - and I need to socialise!
But when i saw it - I thought it was a beautiful film. I was (almost) in tears at the end! so sad! but so well done.

i was gonna buy it - i was just waiting for the 2 disc version to come really cheap - at Asda for

I thought it was a truly marvellous film. It did not have to rely on gory special effects because the acting of all concerned was of the highest calibre. It was haunting and disturbing rather than a blood fest, based on true facts which makes it more frightening. Good to see another British actor taking the lead parts in these bigger movies.

it was an ok film but i'm waiting for the films director Scott Derrickson to do paradise lost. now if its done right, that should be amazing!!!

I saw this on DVD the other day. It is spooky in places, no question about it, but it's more of a courtroom drama than a fully fledged horror film, with the usual cliches in abundance. I agree with the poster above about the 3:00 AM scenes!

I really liked this film. Saw it at the cinema and some parts already mentioned creeped me out. Picked it up on DVD as well. I've seen a lot of films that are worse than this so not sure why some of the reviews weren't too good.

Probably because die hard horror fans want gore in every scene. :D

I thought it was a well made movie, good acting, scary in parts and also quite moving. It had everything in it...and of course, I love court room dramas and thrillers..so it was a double treat for me. ;) :)

That's the thing. Gore doesn't necessarily make a good film. Think of Halloween for example. Minimal gore and yet one of the most popular and effective horror films.
