The essentials for a backpacking trip?

My boyfriend and I would like to hike up to a lake in the mountains that we know of. We each want to take a pack... we will probably be there for 2 or 3 nights... what are the things that we need to take with us? what precautions and important things should we know...
it is in the mountains of Idaho by the way... i don't know if that would change anything lol
